I have a pair of Sony EX-81's and I am fairly happy with the sound quality, although when I listen to them with my iPod (primary use) the sound seems a little thin, and has a lot of high range. When I plug them into my laptop I get much better sound. It seems more full and a lot more even. I was wondering if I would benefit from getting a pocket amp for portable use. I would like something that is cheap, and that will fit into a pocket with an iPod. Right now I am looking at the Electric Avenues, Pocket Amp 2 for $60

A good amp will make any portable source sound better. So... YES, an amp will help. However, I think your money is best served by upgrading your earphones first.

I had the Sony MDR-EX71's (pretty much the same) and I was very unhappy with them. This is after I'd gotten used to my wonderful Etymotic ER-4P's.

Once you audition some better earphones (Sure E3c or Etymotic ER-4), you'll realize just how much inferior the Sony's sound. Muddled. Not transparent. Loose bass without definition.

BTW, If anyone wants a pair of Sony MDR-EX71's, I've got a pair. I'll send it to you free, but you pay shipping. I only have the medium size ear pieces. I threw out the small and large.
