I would think it's a good deal. It's a successor of the NS500V after all. A toroidal transformer mod is part of a power supply mod, always beneficial I guess, but whether that will bring it to 222es specs no idea. For one thing, don't know how close to the 222es the stock 775v might be, or how good the 222es is in itself. But keep in mind, the final output sound depends a lot on the DAC and output stage (e.g. opamp flavor), not just on the power supply.

The stock Sony NS500V had a bright balance. If the 775 follows the same flavor, probably stock with the SR125 will be a rather bright combo.

thanks for the reply! i do not mind a bright sound, as a long time sony, ety, grado user. the meta really does a good job taming any shrillness anyway. as i am getting into diy (well, cables to be honest) i am not opposed to opamp rolling either. i am still searching for a good redbook source, and adding sacd doesn't hurt, you know?

No, it's not a great deal, but $10 cheaper than what's out there, I guess.

I A/B'd this one with the Sony 595. The latter blew the DVD player to oblivion (OK, I'm exaggerating a tiny bit, hehe) and it's only $30 more expensive.

I will second the SCD-CE595 SACD/CD changer. If you don't need the DVD playback function, this is the machine to get. It's great with SACD and more than respectable for regular CD.

You can get it at J&R for $127.00.

My friend recently bought both this unit and a Pioneer DV578A. The Sony is cheaply made and only has a 90 day warranty. The Pioneer sounded very good for the money and the Sony sounded OK. The Pioneer plays DVD-A also which is nice, and the Sony drawer is very non-responsive at times. The Sony display is cheap looking as well and it feels very light. I would stay away from this unit. It seems like you are getting the cheapest of the cheap with SACD thrown in.

Hmmm....really? After reading this 10 page thread over at stevehoffman.tv, the general concensus seems to be that the 595 is better build than the well-received 775. The 595 even compared quite well to Sony's ES SACD changers/players.

BTW, the factory Sony warranty is 1 year parts and labor.
