Do you have a Sony DAP, be it Minidisc, HDD, or flash?

Post what Sony product(s) you have, and your opinion of each one.

I'll start.....

Had the NW-HD1 which I gave to my younger brother. Had an NW-HD5H that I sold. I still have a VAIO pocket player 40 gb that doesn't get used very much.

sony nw-hd5H, nw-hd5/R, nw-hd/S, nw-hd5/B

i love the above unit(s) and stocked up on all of them just for that reason, so when one dies, there is a seamless transition in use with them.

to me it was way ahead of its time with technology, sq, and battery life.

love the sound. what else can i say.

I really love the recent Sony DAP lineup!
I have a NW-E003F, a great sounding little player, but my fave is the NW-S705F. This is it, I am not looking any further (except maybe a 706 w/4GB)! I am finished buying DAPs and phones, the 700 series fulfills my needs perfectly. The "killer app" of the Sony's is that they can play MP3, WMA, AAC, and, of course, ATRAC, all mixed together. People love to bitch about Sonicstage, it's really not that bad. I have had MD for a long time, so I am used to it. Does anyone remember OMG Jukebox? Now that was awful! It's a shame the way Sony let HIMD fade away, just a matter of too little too late. If Sonicstage had been stable and adequate and all the DRM crap gone, HIMD would've been very competitive a few years back. I also own a few Sony PCDPs which I like, too. The Sony sound (in most of their devices regardless of format) is very pleasing to my ears.

Sony NW-A1000 6GB

Sound quality is good to my ears. Love that you can switch between regular headphone out and lineout on the same jack.

Pros:
- The thing I just mentioned.
- SQ
- Looks.
- Build quality seems great. Nice heft to it.

Cons:
- The proprietary software (CONNECT player) is probably the single worst piece of computer software I've ever used.
- Can't get files on it without that software (for this reason I don't often use it).
- I'd prefer the hold feature to be activated by a switch rather than a button (so I could put the hold on while it's off, since pressing anything turns it on).
- Slow navigation. It takes a few seconds when you want to access the artist list, for example.
- Obfuscates file names (and, in turn, doesn't allow file tree browsing).
- Totally useless button on the side that supposedly links to other artists I might like based on what I'm listening to. 1. I'd never use this anyway, since I already have more music from more genres and styles than I know what to do with. It can't recommend something I haven't heard; 2. It's never found anything for any artist I've ever listened to (ranging from totally obscure to household name). This button, with its excellent position, could do any number of better things.
- I'd like to be able to read text files on it. I keep a list of all the music I have (that is, CDs and vinyl I own) so I don't buy things twice by accident. I like to have that handy. It's on my cell phone, but I'd still like it here.

Only time I ever use this is when I'm at home and want to listen to music at good quality (line-out with amp) while in bed or in my armchair. It takes a while to muster up the patience required to use CONNECT player.

What I actually use to listen to music more often than not (while out and about) is my phone, a Sony-Ericsson w810i. Don't have any compaints about this other than the fact that it doesn't have a dedicated headphone out. I never use handsfree things (they make you look *ridiculous*), so I don't want to have to use the included clip on mic thing between the phone and my phones.

Ok

NW-HD1 - love the design , l think that it is the finest looking dap bar none.
Sound quality is good, i got the upgrade but i dont think the MP3 playback is as good as the atrac (it is a bit fragile sounding imo)and mp3 on the HD5 is slightly better.
I still use this most.

MZ-RH1 - best SQ of any Sony i have owned, not designed for portable dap use really but add a mc40elk and its fine.

NW-E015 - Beautiful DAP , simple , good screen , no hiss and cheap A+, this player deserves to sell a lot.

Overall Sony started off well with the HD1 , the HD3 was a bit of a waste of time, they should have just upgraded all their HD1 stock instead. The A series suck for many reasons.
Sony flash players have always caught my eye, i had the NW-MS70D and that was an amazing design, god i wish they released a 1gb - 4gb version of that!

For me an HD1 that had a standard USB port with MP3 and Proper Atrac Lossless support and the 5 bookmark lists from the HD5 would be perfect.

minidisc HIMD mz nh900
The best line out to amp I have heard....had the unit now for three years .. I did not like the headphone out, which is what got me started into amps and looking at other daps....poooor wallet!

dap hd 5
very nice player...atrc 3+ at 350 is sooo good, but wish the player did wav. both the headphone and line out are very good. Wish I had a hd1 to compare

Sony NW-S706 and NW-A808 - both sound amazing. Listening to 'The Wall' on the 706 right now, mindblowing. And with around 70 hours of battery life between them, I couldn't be happier

MD:
-MZ-N510: AA battery, remote port, optical in, AA battery. Alas no mic-in.
-MZ-S1: excellent build quality, but too bulky and only Type-R
-MZ-E720: Very nice design and color (I have the brown one
smily_headphones1.gif
), HD-amp, but no Atrac Type-S
-MZ-NH900: HD-amp, mic-in, wheel control, can record in classic SP, but no MP3 support, limited LCD display
-MZ-DH710: HiMD, MP3, AA battery, scroll wheel, but downloader only
-MZ-RH910: HiMD, MP3, AA attachment, mic-in, but adulterated MP3 playback, LCD although larger than previous gens, still feels cramped and small
-MZ-DH10P: Color screen, screen can display kanji with service mode hack, digital camera, but very slow disc access for digicam purposes, and the fact you need service mode hack to enable kanji display
-MZ-RH1: Unadulterated MP3 playback, metal, mic-in, HD-amp, spectrum analyzer!, very slim recorder, the only MD/HiMD unit that can upload legacy recording, but cannot display track title on the unit's OLED screen and no AA attachment

Flash player:
-NW-E3: nice design, backlit LCD, metal body, spectrum analyzer!, but only 60MB, Atrac3 only, no kanji support, and very poor battery life
-NW-E99: good design, backlit LCD, support all Atrac3+ bitrates and MP3, AAA battery, display support kanji and even korean, ability to shuffle by albums, but USB1.1, surface smudges easily, and 512MBx2 instead of 1GBx1.
-NW-E005F: USB2.0, OLED kanji capable display, tactile buttons, but noisy headphone out, no gapless with AAC, loose resume position after charging with AC adaptor, cannot shuffle by albums, significant battery discharge when "off"
-NW-S705F: Nice stock bud, built-in N/C, gapless AAC!, OLED kanji capable display, but useless album art display, cannot shuffle by albums (c'mon Sony, the E99 can do this), porpietary WM port

On all of them, 1 biggest con is Sonicstage. Yeah, it is more usable now for transferring tracks only, but it's 2007 now. Sonicstage is not even unicode.

Now happy with iTunes + iPod: unicode support, gapless MP3, smart playlist.

Sony NW-HD3:

Pros:
-As strong as it was when I purchased it 2 1/2 years ago. Won't stop working when you drop it, keeps on playing actually
biggrin.gif
Not a scratch anywhere, except for the plastic parts being worn down.
-Decent sound quality
-Small and sleek. No joke, its the same size as a pack of cards.
-Good battery life.

Cons:
-Screen is too small. Only 5 items fit the screen at once.
-Scrolling is a chore.
-Hisses through headphone out. Very noticable on quiet passages even on a packed bus with e4's..
-A small complaint but I would've liked a universal USB connection rather than the proprietary adaptor used (well this is Sony after all)
-20GB is on the scarce side in this day and age.

Not a DAP but I don't think minidiscs are either and they've been included in this thread

Sony D-NE920:

Pros:
-Best looking PCDP (better than D-NE20 imo) I've ever seen. Like a stereotypical UFO saucer shape.
-Good sound quality.
-Immense battery life! I've said it before and I'll say it again, this thing lasts longer than an ipod playing 64Kbps mp3's (with light off), whilst playing redbooks just on the the gumstick battery (with light on)
-Very lightweight and doesn't skip at all.
-No hiss when using IEMs

Cons:
-Headphone out is weak sounding.
-The drive mechanism is very noisy.
-Takes a while to start playing CDs.
-Controls are a bit difficult to use.
-Wished the bottom was metal too

Aevum: You should check out the RM-MC40ELK. Works perfectly with my HD3 so it should be the same with your HD5
