I am knew to this forum, but it seems to be a good place to request information. I am looking for some parts to get a Sony D-9 Discman running again. The player has problems tracking when placed flat on a desk surface. I believe the problem is in the servo system that moves the Laser or that the Laser mount has worn. I have contacted Sony, yes they still have the part. It is available for 73.01. The price for the part seems awfully high to me. The reason I would like to repair this unit is because out of all the Portable Sony Players I have owned this one sounds the best to my ears. This is subjective I realize but I personally prefer this unit. If any one knows where I can find parts for this unit or if someone has a D-9 unit that they know has a good transport assembly in it that they nolonger want please let me know.

I owned a D-9 years ago, and can say with confidence that the D-25/D-25S sounds much better. There's absolutely no way I would pay more than $20 to have a D-9 repaired when D-25S units are available for $45. See my review of the D-25S on this forum for more info.

The good news is that you might just be able to get the D-9 repaired for less than $20. Sometimes portable players mistrack on flat surfaces because grit or dirt particles are stuck to the worm gear, and the low-torque motor can't push past it. Turning the player up onto its side gives the motor a 'gravity assist' which allows the player to track correctly. The inexpensive fix is to have the worm gear cleaned and lubricated. Some shops will do this for around $15 - $20, but if that wasn't the problem, you're out the $20 and are still stuck with a non-functioning player.

I think the best option would be to pick up a D-25S, which uses the same rechargeable battery that your D-9 uses. It might use the same AC adapter too, but I don't know that for sure.

Russ

Thank you for the reply. I have investigated lubing the worm gear. I have cleaned it and cleaned the gears that drive the worm gear. They appear to move freely. As far as getting a D-25S I would likely pursue this but I am using really cheap headphones (Sony MDR 62) at this time that need the Mega Bass switch on the D-9. Yes I know that I should update the headphones and I am considering Sennheiser 590 and 600 but that is another discussion. I do have to agree with you that the new Sony CD players that use the new decoder technology do not sound as good as the old units. The old units are more open and musical. The new units sound like they are compressed and the ESP circuit seems to change the sound also.

So again if you happen to know of anyone who has a used D-9 that needs a home or one that has a good transport that can be moved it would be great.

Hi,
Don't know if you are still looking for a D9, but I have one that I don't use anymore. I tested it and it works fine. The Mega Bass switch seems to be loose, but otherwise everything else is great.
Reply if you're interested.

Hi,
I second Russ on this. D-9 is not that impressive like D-303, D-555, D-515, and D-311. I used to have it and I let it go. Geting yourself a D-25s is probably a good idea. Silicon Salvage should have around 100+ of D-25S left in stock. Shipping is not more than 6.5 dollars and their "buy it now" price is 40 dollars
