You've got a badly converged set. If the set has a flash focus button, now would be a good time to use it. In theory it should restore the Sony to its proper convergence settings. In practice this may not work. In that case, someone is going to have to go into the service menu and converge the set. If there's an extended warranty on the set, this should be covered. www.hometheaterforum.com may be useful. If the set is high-definition capable, there's a sonyhdtv group on yahoogroups.com, but they charge for membership these days. Lots of info there, though.

Hirsch is right, I might just be a convergence problem. My sony has an auto-converge button right in front of the set. Yours may have one too.

My next guess is that you may have an unsheilded center-channel speaker right on top of your TV. Try removing your center channel and see if this fixes the problem.

Good luck

The CRT's in a 53" Sony are in the base. A speaker on top isn't going to produce that effect. All that's happening up there is light reflecting off of a mirror, and a magnetic field won't bother that one way or another. Even an unshielded speaker is far enough away from the CRT's on top of one of those.

It's actually the norm for a set to require reconvergence after a couple of years of use.

Well, my dad leaved a center speaker on top of the TV. We thought it was that about a year ago, so we took the speaker down of the top. Nothing Happened. Can someone please tell me wheres that "magical button" that you talk about?

Thank you so much

It will depend on the model and year of your Sony. Some sets might not have it, but in that case you should have some manual convergence instructions. On my set, it's on the front control panel. It's a small square button on the bottom of the panel.

It's most likely an internal hack. i have a few pages for my XBR on how to go in and manually set everything. I don't see what the worry is. Most likely it's the tv's fault... unless you were messing around in Service mode. If you can't find it call da tv repair man!

P.S.
That center speaker on top... was it shielded? How close are the other pictures to the tube. If they're close get them away immediatley.

Here are manual convergence instructions from the Sony site:

Follow this procedure to adjust the television convergence settings.

IMPORTANT: Some Sony® televisions have a Flash Focus or Image Revision feature and do not have manual convergence settings. Consult the instruction manual for model specific information on these features.

Turn on the television.
On the remote control, press the MENU button.
Press the DOWN ARROW until the SET UP [FIG. 1] menu is selected.
Press the SELECT [FIG. 2] button.
Press the DOWN ARROW until CONVERGENCE is selected.
Press the SELECT button.
Use the ARROW KEYS to select a color.
Press the SELECT button.
Use the ARROW KEYS to align the color with the other colors on the screen.
Press the SELECT button.
Repeat steps 7 through 10 until the cross pattern on the TV screen is completely white.

Well, I dont this it a problem of convergence. Im really thinking my TV got ruined somewhere, because Ive tried the "convergence" regulator, but it doesnt show any proven changes.
I saw theres a "service menu" for Sony TVs. Anyone knows about it?
Walter

p.s: Hirsch, If I got to thank someone in most of my questions in this forum, that is you!

You're welcome.

The service menu is the place to go if you want to screw your TV up REALLY badly. I'd strongly advise against attempting it unless you have the service manual for the set. You'll have to enter a string of commands on the remote to get into the menu, but the settings will be meaningless without the manual to decipher them. I don't know the commands for your model to get into the menu, but hometheaterforum or avsforum might have info.

However, the best advice I can give at this point is to have a technician diagnose your set. If user convergence controls won't align the CRT's, it may be time to let a professional figure out if there's a hardware issue.
