I need something to replace them in the 60-100 dollar range and not being earbuds. If I never touch another pair of earbuds it will be too soon:| Anyone have any ideas? They will be used soley for portable usage on my slimx cd player without an amp. Mainly older rock, newer metal, bluegrass, country etc... basically everything. I forgot to add that they need to be closed because they will be used mostly in really noisy areas.

Oh, that's easy - the Sennheiser PX200.

Hmm... you'd better have a search around here for threads containing PX200 - it could be seen as a tad controversial

I love 'em though.

Those were the main ones I was considering but wondered what kind of headphones people would recommend. Guess I wasn't too wrong. Anyone had any experience with the PX200 listening to trance?

Whats your source? I'll give mine a whirl on something similar... seeing that my ETYs are out of action

Unfortunately I don't know the sonic signature of the SlimX

But, using my E905... listening to System F ~ Cry (Ferry Corsten Club Mix), there is an absolutely huge bass (at loud volume) rolling, slamming ~ you name it... it is it! The mids are warm... without doubt, adding a certain breathy quality to the female singers vocals.. the normal hi-hats etc that you'd hear are heavily reduced.. they don't zing in your ears like they do in club-land, its all quite well (some would say overly) contained... whereas, the MX400s sound brighter, in the treble... but duller overall, as if they have no life...

ATB - Killer... that actually sounds pretty damned cool through the PX200s... the vocals normally sound TOO sharp on other headphones... but its just right on the PX200s...

Hopefully of help

PX200... Color me unimpressed, as you say over there. Muddy in the extreme, horrible huge bass. Trancy tracks will probably sound horribly muddy.
Duncan's 905 had, I thought, a very shouty sound. Which would be pacified by the PX200. With 'normal' PCDP's I've heard the sound will be further dulled. Out of both my MD's the PX200 sounded like mellow junk.
Head size also has a correlation. Those who have seen me and who are also PX200 owners (mtillman, Duncan) can tell you that I have a huge head. That may have something to do with the fact that I couldn't get any treble at all on them.

HOWEVER it's the only very portable closed headphone worth a damn under $100. The DT231 doesn't seem to be closed? the HD212 is junk, the D66 are great but not closed. If you're willing to sacrifice portability a bit, the MDR-V6 or the MDR-7506 is a considerably superior choice.

They don't sound so hot with Trance though, favouring the more clinical side of life...

How does your SlimX sound to begin with? dull... bright? I must confess that what Bangraman says about my PCDP is right, that it is a little... shouty ~ but I also have an EJ1000 if you want me to try that... on the dull side of life??

may i sugest Senn HD479's. If you want nice bass that is surrounding and adds presence to your music ,these do the job quite well. The highs are a little rolled off and this may make these better options for extended listening. They love portalbe equipment and while they aren exactly sealed cans , they do have a fair bit of isolation. For example they silence the fans in my computer to nearly nothing when i use them with my PC , and this aint no consumer PC but a gaming beast with plenty of outrageous fans 35dB+.

All I have to hook up to the slimx is my mx500s, some panasonic noise canceling buds and the originals that came with it, all sound like crap in my opinion, am I just sol in trying to find something to use portable and that blocks out noise?

to be honest you dont want complete silence when your out and about with phones otherwise you may become unaware of whats goign on in you surroundings. The open design of the 497' allows some sound in , but at a minimised volume.
