We n00bs always ask about the closed options in this price range. For those of us whose listening environment works for open cans, what can y'all recommend, for all-around use with a variety of music.

Thanks!

AKG K240S or the Alessandro MS-1 are the competitors in this price range. My experience with the K240S has only been positive. They are great groovalizers and get the tempo going. The MS-1 seems to be a widely known and recommended Grado in the $100 range.

you are speaking my language.

www.alessandro-products.com

check out the MS-1. It is made by Grado Labs. Comparable to the SR125, but more neutral, or "analytical" as Mr. Grado puts it. $99 shipped, even overseas. If you want open, these babies are WIDE open. Without an amp, tonelicious. With a low-z cmoy, baby it's hot inside. With Grado flats from Todd, derricious.

Another K240S & MS1 vote.
Behind them I'd place PortaPros/PortaPros2, KSC35s, CD780, HD497, SR60/SR80, etc.

Depending how much higher than $100: add HD555 ($120)
Depending how much higher than $100 and with any amp on Earth: move to the top K501 ($125)

I agree with blessingx. I have the K240S and they are awsome, I never heard the MS1s, but if they are a more neutral version of the Sr125s they should kickass.

and dont believe the hype about no bass in the ms-1. i am hearing subwoofer level bass, and it's clear - and when i pump my cmoy to 50% (i can't go over, my ears start to fall off) the cans actually start physically rumbling and thrumming to that wicked bass. but the high end is NOT shrill - maybe the flats from todd have something to do with that. anyhow, big big big ups to MS-1s.
