do you think it would be worth it to sell my first generation ipod touch 16gb for something with better SQ -- like the sansa clip? capacity isn't too big of a factor, i just want FLAC capability. i hardly ever use the iTouch's other features (wifi, safari, etc.) i bought it so that i could use the calender feature as well as listen to music, but my phone does that. i'm also not too impressed with the SQ at all. i have an amp on the way, but would really like to get something with a better output section. i guess that i could always do a LOD though.

What about the new Sony 'X' series? Can't do FLAC but you can do WAV

You sure you need flac in a portable? I thought so too, which is why I'm running rockbox and have a 120gb drive in my imod.. but after doing many ABX tests between a 320/256kbps MP3 and a FLAC, I couldn't tell the difference

i suppose not,

but the SQ is very muddy with my sr80s. the grados sound fine with my HP out on my macbook though. regardless, i use it with a usb interface, but still...

i suppose that i'll just try a LOD first. think that if i use an LOD and an amp it'll be better than buying a new DAP? i'm not really looking to spend more than, say, a hundred bucks. that puts players like the clip, fuze, sony NWZ-A81x in my range. thanks!!

it depends.. a sansa clip/fuze has better sound quality right off the bat, but going with an LOD into an amp will surely be a better overall SQ.. but it'll be bulkier

guess that there is only one way to find out, eh? i just ordered a fuze and a LOD for my iTouch. i guess we'll see!

The Fuze is a good choice, as is Cowon. While it doesnt handle FLAC, I am happy with 320K vbr MP3s on my Sony A720 player - end of the day, these are all a vast improvement over the Touch (yes, I have one, and have used it for over 2 years).

I went lossy, then I went back to lossles, and I'll never go back. Everyone's different though, so you might think a high bitrate lossy would sound fine. As for FLAC, there's other lossless formats out there too that sound just as good. Some lossless formats don't support 5.1 or hi-res audio, but for regular CDs, they all sound the same.

Good call on the LOD.
