"4. Widescreen iPod with touch-sensitivity and wireless features (7 out of 10). According to several Apple patents, along with word from component suppliers, Apple is working on a 6th generation widescreen iPod that could feature touch-screen capability. We believe that the new iPod will be a significant improvement to the 5th generation iPod, as the device becomes more video-centric. As such, the iPod line would feature small music-centric and "wearable" players as well as a larger music player with more video-centric features. Eventually, Apple will also likely add wireless syncing technology to the player, but battery drain remains a critical concern before such a feature is added."

If this is the case I think I'm going to go for the Imod. I don't really like the size of the 4g, the last thing I want is a wider Ipod.

I don't know how good of a move this is, though I guess they might be running out of moves.

Funny how it mentions all that stuff but not even a word about the sound quality, since apparently so much can be improved there (imod).

Apple's boss Jobs seems to hear damaged hearing, and the ipod was made how he thought a should DAP be; perhaps that explains it?

Optimistically, if it's meant for more video viewing maybe they bumped the SQ too?

no, they probably lowered it.... anyway, if they come out with a 40gb hard drive one that supports FLAC, and is the same dimension as the 4 gen ipod, but with zune sound quality and the ability to use it as an external hard drive, and use drag and drop, im all for it

i find it interesting that the american market is starting to go the same way as the korean market.

-Small, flash based devices jammed with features.
OR
-Large screened PMPs with everything you could ever want

the middle ground seems to be dying, which I think is one reason Creative is going down the crapper, as well as the slow start to the Zune.

I agree the market for music-focused players is going to flash, which will be a great thing when they get them up to 60GB or so and with actually decent sound quality. My teenager has a 8G Nano and I thought it sounded pretty good till I got a Zune. Now it sounds harsh to me.

The SQ will not be downgraded with any new iPods. Jobs said it himself once that once you include a feature of any kind, you can't lose that feature in revisions of the product. This is one of the reasons he won't put a radio or any fancy features in the iPod. I can't wait for the next iPod to come around, I'd prefer one over the iPhone due to the iPhone's lack of memory.

Actually from what ive heard he is a classical music fan. Ive never seen him listening to an ipod though. Maybe he bought an iriver and listens with something other than the crappy ibuds

It's precisely the middle ground that I bemoan the lack of.

When on holiday I can't be bothered to sync a small flash music player with my laptop with the music I want ever day - how will i know what i want to listen to?
I don't want to listen to crap radio.
I don't want a big colour screen - b&W is fine with perhaps 15lines deep, wide text box.
Great sound quality - or at least a line out without a dock.
Drag and drop.
Gapless.
Amazing battery life (at least 20hours).
At least 35GB as that is what my compressed MP3 collection comes up to now - so perhaps 70GB+ so I can move everything into lossless.

Instead I'll get a bulky device with a touch screen (something else to break), worse battery life (no PMP device that isn't massive can do more than 18hours of audio or so), and probably no better audio performance.

If i didn't take my wagner with me perhaps a 32GB flash device would be enough if i didn't add anything else :'(

Perhaps the 5.5G will be the last good audio player? I hate to admit it, but it's taken apple up to 5.5G to get a player that would tempt me away from my iaudio or creative zen simply based on lineout, battery life, 80GB, size and gapless.
