So I finally fullfilled my dream of owning a pair of Grado PS-1s. It was pretty nice out today, so I decided to snap a few pics.
Grado PS-1 #50 In all her glory:
I have spent many, many hours (probably 20+) with these phones so far over the last three days. I will reserve my ciritcal thoughts and comments for now (extended comments to come once I have spent much more time with them). But here are some early and informal comments:
These are the only headphones (other than the K1000s) that I put on my head, and knew within minutes that I am probably going to end up falling helplessly in love with them.
So far they seem to be everything I was hoping the GS-10000s would be, but weren't. How John Grado could have manufactured something like the PS-1s as their 'Statement Series' phone, but instead put out the GS-1000s is beyond my comprehension.
Early impressions make it seem highly likely that these will be easily dethroning my current favorite Grado phones, the RS-1s.
I have owned all of the top-shelf John Grado phones (GS-1000, RS-1 and RS-2), as well as many of the lesser models (SR-60, SR-80, SR-225, HF-1, etc). I am going to make a bold statement at this point (even though I am still in the 'honeymoon' phase of owning the PS-1s) and say that I believe that the PS-1s are probably the best effort put forth from John Grado thus far.
I also owned a pair of Joe's phones, the HP-2s. Although I felt that they were a very special pair of phones (and I still regret selling them to this day), I can honestly say that the PS-1s suit me and my tastes even better than the HP-2s did.
Please keep in mind that the above comments are based upon the fact that I am using less than optimal amplification. All I have to amp the PS-1s for the time being is a RSA Tomahawk! I have a MAD Ear+ purist HD custom on order, but I probably will not be receiving that amp for another 2 or 3 weeks.
We shall see if my above comments will hold up over the long haul. If I were a betting man, I would bet that the PS-1s are more likely than not the last stop 'Holy Grail' Grado phone for me. I am glad I had the cojones to spend the money it took to aquire a pair.
