Hi all,

Excuse my ignorence on this one -- my D5000s have shed a bit of their lettering and I'm wondering whether the experts on this board have a safe way to remove the rest without damaging the finish. Will a commercial wood cleaner like Pledge, etc do the trick?

thanks and best,

o

Although this hasn't yet happened to mine, my guess is that it is sweat and oils from your hands that is removing the lettering. So just keep fondling them with your sweaty mitts, and don't wipe them down - leave your paw prints on them. It will happen naturally soon enough I would bet!

P.S. The irony of your misspelling of the word ignorance (IE ignorence) was appreciated.

I am not normally the 'spelling and grammar police', but I couldn't resist teasing this time.

I was just teasing with ya!

Good luck with your phones. The Grado HP-2s I owned were very susceptible to sweat and finger oils, and the red lettering came off very easily if you didn't exercise extreme care. As for my D5000s, so far so good, no lettering is coming off. But I have a feeling that will soon change.

Great phones, and well worth dealing with the lettering issue, and even the 'loose screw' issue (although I haven't had a problem with the screws yet either *knocks wood*).

Good to know about the HP-2s as well. It is too bad about the D5000s with the lettering since it is more expensive than the D2000s.

Hey there, this happened to me last week....just rub it with your thumb and it will go away completely. Terrible that it has this flaw, they sound awesome though.

Looking forward to my naked 5000's!

There were some posts by Nebby, where he not only ridded himself of all printing.........but also achieved an overall smoother glossier surface. You don't want to go too far because many times the actual wood is not as attractive as you would wish. So, the compounding approach has a lot of appeal for maximizing their apprearance.

I agree - the "no-lettering" look can be appealing, but some of the deliberately buffed or sanded-down wood cup pictures I saw of the D5000 made the finish look scratcy and uneven. I like the finish it has, and would actually prefer the lettering to stay on unless I choose to remove it (i.e. for it to function and exist as I purchased it . . . ), but I do love these headphones.

Hi all,

Well, thanks to the suggestions in this thread I've managed to safely (I hope) de-letter my D5000s and am pleased with the results.

I did try the Imilhan trick of sweatily fondling these phones for a few hours but, threatened with divorce proceedings, opted instead for that old standby, a few drops of low-acid canola oil on a no-scratch fabric. I rubbed gently and then buffed (hmmm...) and, wihout lowering the tone of this thread any further, a happy outcome was achieved for all.

Here are some pic of the oiled-up Denons, which I offered a cigarette to and promptly rinsed and dried:

I actually really like the new look -- the wood grain is lot more visible and I no longer have the part-words "NON" and "PONES" stencilled gently along the right earcup. No doubt resale value has plummeted but hey, take one for the team, eh?

Anyway, thanks all for your help and apologies for the lousy pix.

best,

o

GREAT JOB! Those are some sweet looking phones. Just wondering if some Minwax Polyuerothane (spray, satin) would have protected the lettering and not diminished the look. They DO look very nice though. Good job with the damage control.

Aaaargghhhhh! The answer is Minwax! Where were you yesterday, sir!

I do wish I'd thought of thought of that (or something like that!) earlier, but I actually like these phones nekkid, and the wood itself now seems a little nicer than I'd originally thought.

Oh, and the D5000s sans lettering have an astonishing new purity in the mids. So, not merely damage control but an upgrade...

Orkney now needs to officially change his name to " The Purifier" (of mids), in part, to off-set the disturbing image created by his admission to sweatily fondling his headphones
