Would solid-state or tubed cdp be a better match for hr-2? I've been reading a lot of good things about Jolida jd 100a. I'm also looking at used sony xa777es. Any thoughts or recommendations?

Depends, do you want to get into sacd? I love my SCD-1 and the xa777es should sound similar enough. Although I'm running it with Ray's Stealth. I don't see myself selling of my SCD-1 anytime; but getting it mod may be in it's future.

I'm now considering players in the $1000 range. Fo extra $400-600 gettting into SACD seems worth it. Unless of course the quality of cd playback will suffer at the expense of sacd being on board. Or would I have to mod it first? On the other hand, sacd is more of a curiosity/feature expectations for me. My listening will be primarily limited to redbook.

What I want to know, is if I have to be looking for some specific features/types of cpds for hr-2 and cd3000; eg warmer vs cooler sound, more analytical versus less, etc. Am I making this more difficult than it is?

It all depends on what you're looking for. What do you think of the HR2/CD3000 combo at the moment? If it's on the bright side, then I'm pretty certain that a sony won't do. Sonys are anything but warm

Although I don't think that they are particularly bright, but my SCD1 lean toward the analytical side (same goes for the 777es). If you find the CD3000 to be bright, and want to add a little warmth to it, a tubed cdp may just be the ticket. I guess my point is, you'll have to figure out what you want to work toward sonically, wihile keeping what you already have (sonically, where you are at) in mind.

Thanks for comments. Since I'm not seeing any definitve NOs towards any specific products, I assume that most players in that price range will sound good. The final decision will come down to choosing a player that will slightly alter the sonic signature (or not) in one or another direction.
