Yes, it's a thing.
When I was doing my very accidental research, these are some of the better socks which I found:
Darn Tough Vermont- these are some of the best of the best socks. Besides great products the people who work there are very friendly and if you did not, you should go to their website and check some of their socks.. they have quite a lot of options to choose from, so you will probably find something that is right for you.

Stance- more of a fashion sock, but their cotton quality is very good and they are very comfortable. They by far have the most fashionable designs, these are the socks you want to show off.

Pantherella- Superb dress socks, again some of the best ones in the market. These are very high quality and premium, and also feature a number of options to choose from the materials used. Another thing to note, this is a old company with a lot of experience

Bombas- Originally featured on the Show Shark tank, these seem to pack quality and technology pretty well. Also they seem to be doing something really great where they make a special line of socks which is not available to the public, but is passed to homeless shelters and to those who are in need. One of those socks is donated for each pair you buy. Very classy and stylish. Don't own a pair, yet.

Corgi- another well respected company which dates all the way back from 1892. I believe they also produce Cashmere socks, as well as Merino wool.

Lindner- same story, I believe these even feature Alpaca wool and silk.

Just like many things, even socks can be luxurious. Although they are just a piece of clothing, a great amount of work, detail and technology can be involved. Many of these companies sell Cashmere, Silk, Merino wool and other materials which are premium.. and come at a premium price.
I personally would say that socks are the most underrated piece of clothing, and the difference a good pair of socks makes with a good suit, dress shoes and pants.. it's noticeable and those who pay attention will see the difference right away. But at the end of the day, they might be one of those elements which some people would call "too much" and would call you crazy for spending over 50 bucks on socks.
You'd be amazed to learn that different materials, amount of cushion, thickness and weight all have a different purpose, pros and cons. I found it interesting to be quite honest, as I do with many things in which a lot of work is put into. Many little things the normal people don't worry about can be special and premium, even pens.

I wanted to bring some awareness to the premium side of socks. Hopefully someone does check these out, reads the story of each of these companies and learns something new. If you know some companies, tell me because I'm listening. Where are you fellow sock fanatics.. or am i the only one.
This is one long ass post about socks..

I usually prefer colorful socks with vibrant colors. Happy socks is a good brand

I know Happy Socks, I mean you can't go wrong with them. But when a brand like Stance exists it's hard to pick Happy Socks over them. Although Happy Socks are much thinner and lighter, I'm not sure whether some models from Stance are thinner but the ones I own are pretty soft and are cushioned well.. definitely not thin.

yeah I agree. Happy Socks are on the thin side. I mostly wear them for the design. I like polka dot design on my socks
You can never go wrong with dots, a classic design.

Happy feet ever since I discovered these.
Then you must try the Darn Tough Vermont socks, Merino wool is a must, trust me.
They are warm in the winter, cool in the summer. That's a characteristic of merino wool

How's the itch factor? I'm pretty sensitive to wool. I'm OK with Smartwool for sports though.
I think I have the same issue as you, but I don't remember having any itching issues.
NOTE: Darn Tough offers a lifetime warranty on their socks... so if they ever rip or something, you just contact them and get a new pair :)

I thought it's worth mentioning that I am not sponsored by any of these companies, just want to clear it up in case somebody got the wrong idea. My main goal is to inspire and hopefully help others to make some quality sock purchases.
What really would mean a lot to me is if anybody makes a purchase of any of the socks I mentioned based on reading this thread. It really would be nice to know that this thread helped someone, instead of somebody making a purchase and me not being aware of it.

Since we are a community here, the whole point is to help each other out, and that's what I tried to do with this thread. I posses some knowledge about socks and I thought, why not and share it with everybody here. It's an interesting thing, and who doesn't like socks.. especially after you try out a real pair of socks.. I doubt you can go back to the crappy ones. I might not have gone in as much detail with each brand as I would've liked, but I know for a fact that Darn Tough offers a lifetime warranty and is just an overall amazing brand. If anybody needs help with a selection of socks from Darn Tough, I posses an exclusive image/diagram which helps you out and clears up some stuff about their selection of socks, and difference in both the cushion amount and the size/length. If anybody needs it, just say it here, and I'll post it here : )

I appreciate your efforts here. Per Sturgeon's Law, 90% of everything is crap. That certainly includes socks, and it's helpful to get sound advice.

I'm a long time user of Thorlos, and lately Augusta Elite, but I've now got some Darn Tough (Tactical otc) on the way. I heard about them a long time ago, but had quite forgotten. :beerchug:

Darn Tough (Tactical otc)
I always get a kick out of the whole "tactical" thing. Are these people shopping for tactical goods really engaged in tactical activities, or is this more of a fantasy or wishful thinking? Personally (I appreciate those who defend my country, but) killing or being killed is low on my list, but to each his own. I also see humor in the notion of "tactical socks"

Tactical is not an exclusively military term or concept. One alternative meaning (grabbed off the net): "showing adroit planning; aiming at an end beyond the immediate action."

Although planning for warm, dry, comfy feet may be properly considered strategy, rather than mere tactics.

"Strategic" is the term I'd use in that case. In my mind, tactical carries element of warfare, or competition. I always assumed that the tactical thing had to do with people who have been in the military, and have come to rely on the methodical preparation & reliance on equipment needed in life or death situations.

There is certainly that aspect to consider.

What I noticed in the Darn Tough tactical line was primarily more subdued coloring, which suits my immediate requirement.

I'll just mention in passing that I have no military experience or aspirations, although I've worked alongside our services on many occasions, here and abroad.
