So why do Panasonics read through damaged CDs better?

mike: I can see your point, especially the philosophical preference. Nevertheless, my ex-girlfriend's badly scratched cds (too many parties at home...) didn't seem to care, because they still played right through on her 3-beam Technics (early 90s), whereas both my Philips (late 80s) and my Pioneer (early 90s) had given up.

As I said Manfred, it is a philosophical preference of mine (single beam over three beam). Honestly, I'm sure there are many fine examples of both.

Although I also have a philosophical preference for "one bit" decoders over "multi-bit", especially in inexpensive cd players because the low level linearity is almost always better in the "one bit" units, there also are excellent (and poor) examples of both.
