Hey guys, first post!
I've been reading around, and I couldn't wait to register.

I'm a first-year college student, over at the University of California, Berkeley, and, I'm a newly-converted headphone fanatic!

Right now, I primarily listen to music out of my laptop or my 3g Iphone, so I'm looking for a pair of good headphones that will work well without the need for an amp...
I have the standard (****ty) iphone headphones, as well as a GREAT pair of Koss PortaPro's (which really showed me what I was missing in my music!)

Now, I do a lot of traveling and have a good appreciation for music, so I was looking into either the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7's (for the ANC), or the Grado SR-60's (for pure awesomeness!). If the Grado's were decent at stopping noise from entering into my ears, I would get them in an instant, but as such, I want a good pair of cans that will be good for travel (i.e Airplanes, the BART, buses, etc) as well as for a decent appreciation of true music.

Any help?

SR60 is not good for travel since it's open design. IMO, ANC7 would be the choice.

or you can find used ES7 on the FS forum. It's such a good can too.

I sure like Grado/Alessandro headphones under $100, but you might also want to consider the Sony MDR-V6. I had a pair for years and loved them. That was before I found this place, but am thinking of getting another pair for travel. They fold up, come with a storage bag and sound very good for the money.

I was looking into the Sony MDR-V6's - seem quite excellent. Are they good at blocking out sound (obviously not to the extent of the ANC7's, but still)?

The ES7's seem to be out of my budget, but I will keep them in mind for a upgrade in the future. The thing is, they're not designed to block out sound at all really, meaning that if I was interested in headphones that didn't block out sound, I would get the Grado's in a heartbeat - and save some $$ doing it as well!! (Counter-intuitive to the site, I know

)

So it's between the Sony V6's and the ATH-ANC7's...
