The guitar attracts me because it is a lot more portable than other instruments. The sax is interesting, but you cant sing while playing the sax.

and if I ever go camping and stuff the guitar is more convenient

I didnt get an expensive one, I got a cheap with that comes with a dvd, So Im not sure if that was a mistake?

no, it's not really a mistake. That's pretty much what I bought when I started. On the other hand it's good to buy a better guitar if you know for sure you will continue to play. Everything will just sound better, and be more rewarding.

yes as I get better I plan on getting a nice guitar with a line out.

Regarding what inpires me, I think I will take the hobby serisously as my inspiration is not to impress girls, Its for my own desire to sing for God

I usually spend my nights in devotional time before i go to bed, reading.
but I like singing and its from my heart so its nice to be able to to sing some Holy music when im at home during personal devotional time.

Not sure if people are familiar with these songs, but I want to learn a couple of songs like

nothing without you by bebo norman and more than a friend by jeremy riddle.

I dont really have any desire to sing beatles and beach boys music, no offense to fans however

Or buying a better guitar later on will make him/her appreciate the new sound even more.

At least thats what I've found with various acoustic and electric instruments.

Of course, if you have the money then you can get the Orpheous....wait...we're talking about guitars *doh*

Don't lie, we all know you are waiting for the day that never will come where you meet Jessica Alba and impress her with your audiophile headphones, superb diy cables and of course guitar skills (to seem like not a total geek.)

I left my guitar home at my parents place. I almost brought it back with me last time I was there.

As for learning, if you are learning for gospel and fellowship purposes, you must learn chord basics. There should be some decent books at Guitar center. Particulary look for one that shows how to play chords, and fingerpicking.

And is there anyone in your church that plays guitar? Best way to learn is from someone else showing you.

The guitar should arrive any day now, I was reading up on how to read guitar tabs, it doesnt seem very difficult, Im pretty excited,

when Im ready to get a better guitar what are some companies I should look into??

I found a guitar by Ibanez which is really cool looking and about $500, is that a pretty good company?

how much is a good guitar supposed to cost?

For acoustics, I would look into something along the lines of a Martin or Taylor.

I do like the Ibanez and am a proud owner of a Jem 7VWH as well as a JS100 however I'm not a big fan of their acoustic guitars.

After you learn a few songs and have gotten used to the sound of your guitar, go to your local guitar shop, if possible don't look at the price tag and start playing. You will notice a difference in sound....when you look at the price tag, you'll notice the difference too! :p

Sorry about your wallet!

what difference in sound should I expect?

Is it bad to get an acoustic/electric guitar in one?

itd be nice to have an acoustic guitar that can plug into an amp if needed.

I just mentioned Ibanez because I did some searching online and they had a blue wash guitar that wasnt priced too bad IMO. I like it because its different from the natural wood tones you see everywhere.

The advice you've gotten in this thread is great actually - learn the chords, then with your music, look at the lyrics and put the right chord above the right words and there you go - you can strum the chords to the music!

once you get all your necessary chords down and can strum through a whole song without looking at the tab or the fretboard and just read the lyrics and switch to a G-chord when you see that "G" on top of the next word (or even better, just memorize the lyrics and when the chords come in!) i think that's the time to think about getting a better guitar.

until then, don't get discouraged, learn how to tune your guitar, and if your guitar constantly goes out of tune because the tuning mechanism sucks, maybe replace that guitar sooner than later - it's no good getting discouraged for something that's out of your control!
