so I'm about to buy a pair of UE SF5 Pros -- two questions

Are they good when unamped and paired with an iPod?

and Are they good for heavy rock and IDM/ambient electronica?

To your first question, yes.

To your second, the general consensus around here is yes, they are. I personally found them to muffle the vocals and de-tune most instruments in its heavily recessed mids section, but of course YMMV.

i think the fit will be a problem.

I looked this up on Google and saw the UE site describing how to do this, but it didn't make much sense to me in terms of how to accomplish it. perhaps I'll understand what it's trying to show me when I actually get the 'phones, but just in case, how exactly do you do this "mod"?
