Need some advice actually. In terms of a music server, is it better/simler/preferred to have the music files on an external HD connected via USB/Firewire or would it be better to simply upgrade the computers HD to a larger size to accommodate the music files?

So, what's the consensus here. Leave the old PC drive alone and just get the external or upgrade the aging PC hard drive and use the new external as a backup drive? If you've got an even better idea, I'm all ears!

Edit: One other question....is anyone here accessing their home music collection remotely? Is it as simple as using the IP address as instructed in the manual i.e...http://<my IP address>:9000/? Just curious how that process works.

I upgraded an old computer a bit to house my music. Swapped motherboards to support a mirrored raid and bought a passively cooled video card to make it quiet enough that it can't be heard across the room. I'm also keeping a copy of my flacs on a spare hd. I really don't want to have to rip them again.
