Hey All,

Is there a site out that lets you add artists to "watch" and then notifies you whenever they've released a new album? I'm finding it hard to keep up with everything - one day I'll be searching around and "wow, how come I didn't know about this?"

Cheers

I became a pretty big fan of the iLike application for Facebook. You basically select all of your favorite artists and you get a mini newsfeed with release and concert dates. You can also rsvp to shows, which is convenient if you're trying to avoid a stalker ex girlfriend. ;-)

This one really got me thinking. I just might jump in there and build such a site. It looks to me like nothing quite like it exists. I could send out email and twitter notifications and maybe even real web 2.0 style interaction...

Is this iLike application any good? Anyone think it's worth building such a dedicated type of site?

The tricky part will be reliably getting the release information . . .

That would be great.

For starts you can search amazon.com for "pre-orders" and pick the release dates from there and use that to send out the info. Ofcourse this will not work for all artists, but its a start.

I could do with any ideas anybody has for info sources. I see Amazon does have some stuff... I don't suppose there would be any reason I couldn't scrape from their site?

How about community involvement? I would need to let people update the info somehow... but how could it be done safely? Perhaps the site would require the help of some moderators to verify submissions or something?

It is a challange...

Also, I just checked out that iLike facebook app (as much as I hate fb) and it is pretty slick... and has some features that would be outside the scope of my site..... but who wants to rely on facebook for this?!

I wonder if any of the record labels offer this service? Harper Collins offers it for books. I get notifications of books coming out from a few authors. I've not seen anything on record label web sites, but it might be there somewhere. It would definitely be a service I'd use.

I checked out allmusic.com - it doesn't let me add artists to a "watch list". I guess I'm not looking specifically for notifications, but a way to easily monitor a group of artists so I don't need to individually search them out every time I want an update.

I'm actually surprised there doesn't seem to be any sort of site for this...

allmusic has a weekly email of new releases. It's only highlights though. I also get weekly emails from some record labels like DG. They're OK but not artist specific.

I do get an email from Zappa's web site whenever a new album comes out. And even though he's been dead for over 15 years, new albums of previously unreleased stuff keeps coming out. Some incredibly good stuff too.

Does iLike actually let you sign up for arists and get notified when they release new albums? Playing around with it casually, it does not seem so.

That's really what we're talking about here: a simple service one can sign up for, add their favorite artists, and get notified when new albums come out from these artists.

I've made a website that does exactly this, hope you will find it useful: Muspy
