I think I may buy a Singlepower PPX3 amp based on the good comments on this site. I may also buy a Senn HD 650 later if I have the money and am convined that it can rock hard enough and deal with the bass in hip-hop. At the moment I have the AKG K271 Studio and the AT A500. I like the sound of the AKG K271 Studio but find it lacking in the bass with my hip-hop music.

My question is...would the Singlepower PPX3 help bring out the bass in my AKG K271 Studio?

Hmm....I've not heard the K271S with the PPX3. However, I understand that it has good bass response, particularly for a smaller tube amp. I'm thinking you'll like it, but it depends on what you're using now as to the relative improvement.

BTW - the K271S responds VERY well to tubes. You'll like it!!

I'm not sure where this whole bass response kerfuffle gets started with the K271S. I've always found it to be very full in the lower octaves...almost too much so with some amps. I know that the source can make a lot of difference. It also becomes a matter of personal listening taste. None of the AKG cans are "basshead" cans for sure, so if one likes skull-cracking bass, they won't find it. That said, the mids are what keep me coming back. It's where most of the music takes shape, and IMHO they do that VERY well at AKG.

From what I've read and also experienced myself, BASS is were the Singlepower amps excel. They all seem to have great bass. I think as you get further up the chain, the bass just becomes a little more refined.

I think you'll love the 650s with hip hop. I've heard the Beyer DT770's which are supposed to be THE best bass headphones. Personally, I thought they gave a very over-emphasized bloated rendition of bass notes and completely smothered the entire midrange. When I played a couple of hip hop tracks through my 650s for the first time, I was totally blown away. I couldn't believe how much impact I was getting from a pair of cans. Not to mention that there was actually detail in the bass notes. Mind you, this is before I even got my Singlepower amp. At the time I was using them with an RA-1 and the 650s still destroyed the DT770's (in my opinion).

Good luck.

I don't listen to hip hop, but I do listen to industrial which also requires a really good bass response. Although I didn't think so when I first got them, the 271s have excellent bass when plugged into the PPX3. The bass will not suddenly overtake the rest of the music, it just doesn't seem to be the nature of these cans, but the PPX3 will help flesh it out a bit and give it some more body. As elrod-tom mentioned, the 271s do respond very well to tubes and I find them to be at least as sensitive to tube changes as my HD600s. I also have HD600s and they do very well from the PPX3 for bass response, actually at times it gets to be excessive but it sure is fun. I have never heard the HD650s but if they sound very much like the HD600 they should do very well for bass-heavy music.
