Since they are now official: Nano 4G and iPod Touch 2G Sound Quality Thread

Yeah, the EQ is CRAP!!!! Otherwise, the Touch 2G actually has better SQ than I'd imagined it would. I use my A829 in the car (tactile is best for driving), and all else is my Touch. Great player!!!!
About the online petition, is this for a 5-7 band custom EQ? Start it off and I'm adding my name to the list. Would TOTALLY make the Touch a perfect player IMO!!! Never thought I'd be saying that, but that's how I feel.

I can confirm it works great with the 2nd gen Touch. Even with the Touch in sleep mode, if I press the button on the adapter it starts the music from sleep without having to do anything else with the Touch(screen stays off). As you said, single press play/pause and double press skip to Next track. Are you sure it also does Back a track???

not certain it does on the touch but since the iphone 2.1 software update it does it on my iphone

three taps real quick. Glad you like it; it really is great for te times I just have my minimal iphone 3g->SE530 rig with me does sound great but have you tried the line out yet. the iphone LO is truly beautiful when used with a good interconnect so I would assume the new touch has a great LO too very similar dacs (not sure if they are tyhe same) when I was initially talking on here about pairing an amp with my SE530->iphone setup I had a number of people try and discourage me; they would always say that because the iphone actually has a quite good HP out and the shures are so sensitive that I would be unlikely to notice the difference from LO. I can confirm that this logic is absolutely flawed. the extra texture and extension in both upper and lower frequency ranges is marked. I actually had to do a bit of a double take. my shures have never been known to me to have such an expansive headstage and def not known for their treble. So sensitive doesn't necisarily mean 'easy to drive to their full potential'. It has such a low noise floor it may as well not be there at all; even with the SE530's very sensitive phones.

re: the iphone adapter with touch glad you like it I couldn't see why it wouldn't be as useful to you on the touch as it is to me; as you say the ability to wake from sleep and play the last track you had on (plus all the iphone related features) all without doing anything but tapping your lapel is wicked. the mic doesn't sound half bad either. pity I cant use it when my pico arrives next week

'team shure' luvin it. well I don't think its remote features will still work if I just have it connected but have the shures hooked up to the pico. theoretically it could work Hmmmmmmmm

Like it! Its been the thing thats made me keep the Touch! Couldn't be doing with the screen thing as I often play parts of a song then skip forward. Especially useful if walking around with Touch in your Pocket/Backpack.

You are a STAR sir

The 3 clicks for BACK does work on the Touch.

They should bundle something like the Shure Adapter with the iPod Touch. I'd recommend anybody to give it a try. The MIC also works with one of the App Store Voice Apps (can't remember name now).

Doubt the AMP thing you mentioned will work with the Adapter. The 3 rings of the plug need to be in the headphone socket to work (L/R/Signal). I tried a 3.5mm phono extension cord in front of the Adapter & no-go.

The Griffin Smart Talk headphone adapter also works as a remote using one, two or three clicks to pause\play and move between tracks. With it's built in mic I am also able to make Skype calls and use MSN chat with the 2G Touch using the free Fring app.

Although I have not tried it if you are using a LOD>amp>phones I have a feeling you could still use the adapter on it's own through the HO as a cabled remote and mic.

Currently waiting for my LOD to arrive but I sampled the Minibox-E+ through the HO and to me it sounds as good as the HO on the D2.

I have a lot of love for the Touch at the moment.

Cool glad to be of service my good man

I wasn't going to plug it (shure adapter) into the amp and expect it to work; as you say the 4th contact needs to be in play and that information isn't carried along a standard cable; I was simply going to leave just the shure adapter plugged into the iphone HP out (using it like a corded remote and mic) with nothing else connected to it; and have the shures plugged into the amp/Line out. we'll see if that works shortly. I love it too; i'm as impatient with my music sometimes as you it seems

It would've surprized me if all those functions didn't work on the touch; considering they are basically the same hardware and software platform.

also; since it (the iphone adapter) utilizes the same circuitry (albeit with higher grade components) as the apple iphone headphone remote, any software functionality that is added post release should also work flawlessly with the shure version.

Hi,

I'm trying to choose between the Shure adapter and the Griffin Italk. The Griffin is half the price of the Shure, does anyone know if it degrades sound quality. I just read a review of different adapters on Macworld and the reviewer preferred the Griffin for form factor and actually said it was quieter than the Shure. I'm sure he's right about that but I would trust you all here as to the overall SQ.

So my Touch arrived, and being a diehard Zune/Clip/Sony DAP owner, I have to say, I am very impressed with the SQ. No EQ, using both the Sleeks (already ordered the iPhone/Touch cable) and the Image X10s, and the sound is sublime. Apple has turned me, as they say in law enforcement. And I love the Touch features, apps, etc. I don't like the idea of using the touch screen to change tracks, so the cable replacement (and a Griffin Smart Talk for the Images) is a must.

Based on reading here, I tried the acoustic and electronic EQ settings, but the former made the sound a little too harsh, and the latter gave it too much of a reverb effect. Sticking with flat. Looking forward to see if the amp makes any difference, but it seems like the amping angle may be superfluous. Not sure. Hope not, cause I did get a nice LOD for it. We'll see.

I got my touch today and I found the SQ to be kinda alright.. Well I guess I was hoping it would match up to my samsung but I am rather disappointed. I don't think it is even close to ZUne. There is certainly no to less hiss compared to samsung but the audio quality is certainly not there. Holy crap I can't believe I have been sucked into the APPLe marketing and I blowed serious 300$$. To all the potential buyers don't be a lazy arse like me, go and check out the sound by visiting a near electronic store, rather than blowing your hard earned money by ordering this thing online..

I think it just sort of lacks that punch from the newer Sony players. That said, I really enjoyed listening to slower, more instrumental tunes on the touch.

the griffin has better noise reduction, and so can sound better in noise environments, but the shure's mic/sound quality is superior(as you would expect) and I actually think it looks better. the adapter doesn't degrade sound quality whatsoever, its just a cable with another line for data and audio going back to the device. otherwise it is just a normal extender cable with good quality sockets.

I think your reply is the first really negative user feedback I have seen! Personally I find SQ is great.

Totally agree with you that any potential buyer should try themselves first. Its a lot of money and everybody has different hearing.

I took my Touch 32gb 2G back to the store 2 days ago cause the SQ wasn't as good as my A829 or D2. I only used it for games and browsing the net. I ended up getting a PSP2000 and a few games, better option for me I guess. Too bad as it's such a great toy.
