Just curious if there is any info or advice out there on how to go about silencing a Mac Pro. Not a seriously noisy machine anyway, but if it can be improved... why not eh?

You can use quieter hard drives, such as Western Digital's GP series. They vibrate less and have less audible seek noises as well. They spin at 5400RPM rather than the usual 7200RPM. You may or may not notice slight performance differences depending on what you do.

You can use smc fan control to set up a profile around 600rpm which should be sufficient for cpu idle operation. The noisiest part should be that dismal Optiarc DVD Burner. You might want to consider a lower noise profile drive such as Samsung Writemaster.

Both good suggestions - especially the DVD drive replacement - that think is noisy as hell!

Don't think I could handle slower drives... 7200RPM is more than slow enough... but my existing ones would benifit from some rubber gromits...

Further suggestions welcomed!
