Hi everyone, I'm looking for a headphone to update the 660s that I have always found too dark and veiled, I am undecided between these 2 models, I am interested in detail, the instruments separation, the neutrality of all frequencies and that it is very engaging on a musical level
prevailing genres I listen to: pop/rock 80, new wave, dreampop
What do you know how to tell me about it and which one would you take in my place? Other alternatives in addition to the two cited?

If you want "separation and detail" Planar Magnetic is the way to go, like Hifiman cans, resolution is generally beyond what dynamic drivers can do(distortion is much lower). Cons are you may possibly need a headphone amplifier and they may not be the most comfortable.

Had the 1840 for some time. Switched to the HD 490 PRO — it’s a noticeable improvement. The 1840 lacks sub-bass, and the THD is quite high, to the point where you can clearly hear distortion on some bass-heavy tracks. It’s also very unforgiving with poorly recorded material, and the highs can get a bit shrill or piercing at times.

I’ve also owned the HD 650, 660S2, and 600. Compared to those, the 490 PRO feels more dynamic on producing pads. It has better bass extension, smooth and controlled highs, and noticeably improved soundstaging — not huge, but clearly more open. Comfort is excellent, and pad swapping is quick and easy, with each pad offering a noticeably different sound signature. The sound is neutral with a slight warmth, but never veiled. It’s more analytical than other Sennheisers, yet still musical and engagin.

I've had the RX70 refine and have the 1840. The RX70 sounded better than the original, but is a tight squeeze for larger heads. ASR did measurements and there were distortion issues and ohm rating in the bass region soars, so a good amp is needed.
The 1840 is best for dual use if you also game, since the bass response isn't so much that game explosions don't drown everything else out. There really light compared to the Hifiman Edition XS and take about the same to power. You can EQ bass with a preamp reduction in a music player, and the don't have that treble peak of the DT1990.
They Eq well to the Harman curve, best thing is their lightness if you use them long periods of time. Lighter clamp than Sennheiser so they're glasses friendly.
