I just got a set of Sensaphonics ear sleeves for my SE846s. They are fantastic. They fit great and the bass improved dramatically. I had to turn off the R&B equalization on my BTR5. Now, I am using the blue filter with no equalization. It took me a couple days to get used to the pressure on the inner ear. It can get fatiguing until you get used to it. I am surprised more product manufactures don't use ear sleeves instead of customs. That's because you can easily take off the sleeves and use tips any time you want. Certainly would help with resale. This is my first custom of any kind and I like it.

Next week, my Vision Ear VE8s arrive. Can't wait to compare them.

Give your ears a week or so to adjust to the feel of it.

I don't think so. I asked them if they 3-d printed the ear sleeves and they said no. They still hand make them.

That’s what I thought, that they make molds out of the ear impressions. Too bad the MEE custom ear tips are just for their IEMs.

What is a good criterion for replacing the memory foam tips? Do they ever decay? Do they lose the mechanical properties? Are there any hygienic considerations? Do they need to be replaced at set intervals?

I use the IEMs approximately 2-5 hours per week.

I don't know if there are any official indicators (might be worth checking the Shure knowledgebase), but I change them when I think they feel less squishy. Though my impression is that they last some years with light usage.

I don’t know of a definite set of criteria, but as @plakat said, loss of memory foam properties (they rebound too fast) is one thing to look for. Too much build-up, and too much breakdown of the coating over the foam are other things to look for. Fortunately, they’re relatively inexpensive. I used to use the Shure foam tips before switching all my Shure IEMs to Spinfits (CP-800) but I used to change them when they started to lost their firmness and would not seal as well for me...probably every 4-6 months or so but I used them for at least 2-5 hours per day.

Noticeable decrease of their original properties or/and any mechanical damage that would prevent further usage. At least these were my criteria years ago when I used these tips

Thank you @plakat , @IEMusic , @TK33 and @iFi audio for your excellent advice. I think that, at my relatively low rate of usage, I should change the tips annually, then.

As an aside, I remembered that some while ago I had let a friend test my SE846s to see how great they were. After that, I washed the tips with soapy water, for hygienic purposes, and let them dry out. In the end I noticed that, after being washed, the tips had lost their memory effect and were elastic like a spring. Of course, I had to replace them.
