Shure SE846 Impressions Thread

Anyone got a good recommendation for a great and comfortable balanced 2.5 cable for the Shure SE846?
(I personally used linum superbax cable in the past and found the comfort to be pretty good. However the connectors don't fit the shure connectors to perfection. If you touch it at the connector, sound can cut)

This is what I use... You can spend more of course... but I have no complaints. Note that the 2.5mm balanced does not have volume or mic. This is a lightweight cable (4 core 5N OFC) and the ear hooks are flexible (no wires) which I find considerably more comfortable than the stock cables.

Aliexpress ( FIIO or Blue shield electronic technology ( from Aliexpress, ask for Meng she will design you one, see first screen shot , 8 cores, copper 62 Euros ) both of them are 2.5 balanced cables

Hi, I also have a cable from linum, I received some small washers with it to place between the plug and the IEM, try reaching out to them, I would assume that they will ship you a set.

The IE800 (and the newer IE800s) are really good headphones. I have very fond memories of them. I only parted with mine because I felt the SE846 overall suited me better (longer cable, secure over-ear fit, less piercing treble at ~11 kHz, tunable, isolating). If you don't need isolation ,the FLC8d is also really good and only around $200. I should get paid by FLC for the number of times I've plugged their headphones

If you look back through this thread, the IE800 used to be the main SE846 rival and the source of many flame wars  It seems the IE800 hype has faded now and the CA Andromeda has taken the role of antagonist on this thread. Overall, I prefer the sound of the IE800 to that of the Andromeda. The main drawback is probably just its lack of isolation.

Great impressions. Speaking of fit, that was the reason I did not buy ie800 in the first place. And I always wonder if anyone is making custom molds for the ie800 (i know it is near impossible for dynamic driver iems smh.)

I wouldn't try the custom tip route, even if you could find somebody willing to sell you some. They wouldn't help with the lack of isolation and they'd drastically change the frequency response - almost certainly for the worse.

That’s true.

Very good review that I'd not seen. I also auditioned the two, finally decided on 846, but yearned for the ie800 and bought it six months later. What's amazing is how well these two still hold up against all the new iems. My 846s have been given a boost with a new Fiio balanced cable into an iBasso Amp8EX, great combination.

You're welcome :)

Even though the 846 isn't my DD anymore, I've still kept it. It's a classic. Still listen from time to time. Regarding the IE800, I've upgraded it to the IE800S. Enjoy its non-peaky treble better. 846 still the livelier of the two.
