Well today I was on the earphonesolutions site as the cable from my UE sf.5Pros is coming loose after only a few months (not happy). I'm pretty sure the warranty won't cover it so I'll need to pay for a replacement cable but at only $20 that's not so bad, even if the postage over here to England will be quite high and may take a while...

ANYWAY, I was snooping around their site and I see that the Shure PTH microphone is available to buy on its own, for a pretty reasonable $60. I was just wondering what people here thought about it? I know quite a few of you will have it with the E500s but I would also like to hear from anyone who bought it separately (as I am thinking of doing) to know how it works. Is it worth it? I've heard that the cable is stupidly long, and that the unit itself is pretty heavy. What's the battery life like?

Also, a belated 'thank you' to everyone who helped with their advice when I was looking at getting my first 'real' IEMs at Christmas. I am so happy with my choice of the sp.5Pros and all my friends are suitably jealous too *grin*

Send UE an email first, you will find that they stand behind their products 100%, if the cable has an issue, Im sure they will just send you another. I did and had one within 24 hours, but then Im in the same state.

I have the E500s and have given the PTH every opportunity to perform, in planes, trains and the like and cant find any way to use it... its too large and the E500s are not hard to just quickly pop out if you need to hear something. You will find many for sale up here as I think most people feel the same.

I have emailed them, although of course it being a Sunday I won't get a reply until at least tomorrow. It would be nice if they sent me a replacement as I am very careful with my stuff and it was kinda disappointing to see the cabling come apart like that, so soon after I bought them...

I didn't realise the PTH was so... unpopular. I admit that I don't have a serious demand for having one in my life, but for the money (about £30) it seemed like it might be worth a pop. Maybe I'll wait to see if Shure take on the criticism (if that's the right word) from all you E500 owners and come up with a newer model/design. I like the idea but if there's no practical payoff then maybe I'll just save my cash.

Thanks for the reply though CMasten. Hopefully I'll get a similar response from UE as you did!

Save yourself the money.

I find the unit useless, which makes me mad at the fact i paid extra $50 for the pth set. I mean the unit works perfectly, and does exactly what it is meant to do perfectly. When on, the mic lets u heard the surrounding sounds with enough clarity and detail. The problem is, I find it pointless since it does not take dat long to remove the e500s. Their design by fat the best i have seen on any IEM, although the Superfis are even faster to wear and remove, which would make the pth unit even less of a need.

Actually I find it kind of a PITA to have to keep removing and reinserting the earbuds when traveling and i want to hear something on the PA system, etc., and find the PTH very useful under these conditions. Also very helpful at work where you need to speak to people often while listening.

Admittedly the applications for PTH are limited, but under the right circumstances they are pretty helpful. Whether it is worth seeking out a PTH device would depend on how (and how often) you intend to use it.

And 'dat' is my opinion...
