Does these headphones require an headphone amp?

Required? No. But an amp designed for IEMs (ie: RSA Tomahawk or Predator) would certainly make them sound even better.

If you are planning to buy them to use with a portable player unamped, then you'll will probably be better off saving some money and getting a cheaper dual-driver armature IEM like Westone UM2 or Jays Q-Jays, or a high quality dynamic IEM, like Denon AH-C700 or FutureSonics Atrio M5. Shure E500 will work OK unamped out of an iPod, but most likely nowhere near their full potential, unless you got an iMod or some vintage Sony PCDP with an amped line-out. More precisely, out of low-quality sources, the Shures may sound a little thin, muddy in the bass and lacking in the treble and so not very pleasant to listen to. Just my 2 cents.

How do they sound compared to the Senheiser HD650?

i still dunno how u can compare an IEM to a full open can. they don't sound alike. i kno my shures sound nothing like my HD600s.

I have the HD650 but I cannot take them with me for a walk, in public places or my office. I'm embarraseed

i've taken my beyers out but not my senns cuz they leak too much noise. i'm not embarrassed shyt i paid for em i'm gonna wear them where i daym well please.

The E500s do not require and amp but they sure do kick-ass with a Tomahawk!
