Anyone else thinks the E500 is too sensitive? At 119 dB/mW, they are too loud for me. I always need to use the attenuator, which in itself is a problem, both in quality and in ergonomics.

My problem with this is that without the attenuator, you will have to lower the volume in the source, and many times the volume control is not the last step in the sound path, it is controlled in the preamp, so with very sensitive headphones, you'll hear the amp's hiss or other noises.

The attenuator is a problem because:

1. It is cumbersome.

2. It is bad quality. When you are in the lower ends, it mixes the channels. I think it also affects frequency response, but I haven't tested for this. In the minimum, the left and right channels are almost completely mixed.

By the way, I've found this of the PTH too, that's why I don't use it. It mixes channels, if only a bit, but it's noticeable.

So I'm guessing that going with the SE420's (rated at 109 dB/mW, as the E4C's) will relieve me from this nuisance. My question then is: Do E500's (pretty new, not used much, and only in the house) sell well on ebay? Will I lose much from "downgrading" to the SE420's (I am guessing not).

I might also be tempted to go with the Westone 3 (107 dB/mW, even better for my standards). I tried the UM2 and they were great, but redundant with the E500 that I already had.

Thanks for any advice.

i would agree, i always use them with the Ety er4P to S-attenuator (75 ohms, i think), and they're still pretty sensitive/efficient
