I just bought a Shure E2C to replace a KOSS KSC75. although they fit better, I feel that the bass is significantly weaker than the KOSS, w hich is like $90 cheaper.

is it that I'm putting it wrong in my ear (i put it over my ear and the thing arcing upwards..using the black isolating sleeve)?

some have told me that the KOSS over exaggerates the bass

while others think I shouldn't expect that level of bass from an earbud

I haven't heard the KSC75's, but it stands to reason that, with a much larger driver, they can produce a more powerful bass than a tiny IEM. However, the E2Cs do have a fair amount of bass if you get a proper seal. Remember they are much closer to your eardrum and most background noise is blocked out with IEMs.

And I'm gonna guess that those KOSS headphones do over exaggerate the bass. Better phones strive to give a more balanced response. There's lots better than E2Cs, but keep in mind IEMs and headphones aren't necessarily trying to achieve the same things. IEMs provide a discrete, portable way to listen to music. Top IEMs sound very good too.

With the E2Cs, I'd start with the yellow foamies as tips first to see if you are getting a reasonably good seal. Just squeeze the foam so it compacts around the tube, insert into the ear and hold it there for a few seconds while the foam slowly expands and fills your ear canal. That will get pretty good bass with the E2C. Other tips may improve the sound (or not). I liked the soft grey tips because they were easy to insert, sounded good, and didn't get dirty like the yellow foamies do.
