For listening to AAC files on an iPod touch (2d gen), is it worth the extra $200? I hate buying something substandard the first time and then upgrading after a regretful while but there is a point of diminishing marginal returns.

Yes. It's worth the extra money.
I owned both, and the SE530 is more comfortable, sounds way better, has way more detail, has a nice soundstage and looks better!
So, take the SE530 and never look back

Havent heard the 310, but the 210 and 110 are truly outclassed by the 530.

I too hate buying subpar only to upgrade for more money later. Go for the 530s =)

I have owned both, and preferred the se310.

The se310 provided great clarity and detail, in a more neutral presentation. Compared to the se530, the treble sparkled just a bit more on the se310

I've always heard that the SE530s are one of the best IEMs available. Guess they can't foolish so many people like that

Although my budget only allowed me to have the UE TF 10 Pros

I can vouch for the 530 being a great great iem but if u could get a tf10 instead of a 310 I would do that

there is a great chance you find yourself upgrading if you choose the second best.

I bought the 530 last year and never even looked at the 310. Think of it of as an investment in your hapiness.

SE530 they look great feel great, sound great, if its in your budget to get them; do it, otherwise you will always wonder what they would've been like until you end up getting them in the end anyway

that is a great argument indeed. You'll probably want to upgrade if you choose the 310s. Unless you're not an impulsive consumistlike lots of head-fi'ers( myself included

shure se210, UE sp5pro then se530.....i would have gone directly to the 530

So I got the 530s w/o any hesitation. As they are my first set of IEMs, I am experiencing the usual frustrations -- can't hear much bass so trying to replace the med olives with the larger ones but can't get them off etc. etc. I also have to clean my ears -- gross!

if you can't ear bassed with the 530 you have a serious problem there. 530 has strong bass.

I think it's simply due to the seal -- not that I have a "problem"
