I live in the midrange!
An interesting exercise, and one that's had me racking my brain for much of the day.

Let's say that the apocolypse is upon us...what are the last 10 songs that you would ever want to hear? Here's my list...it's not what you'd call super up-beat, but what the hell, it's the end of the world, right?

10) The Zombies - Hung Up On A Dream: Ten seconds into this song, I knew it was one of my favorites.

9) Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York: Another song that I knew was a new favorite 10 seconds into it. Just gorgeous....

8) The Stone Roses - Ten Storey Love Song: Sort of an unexpected addition to the list, but apparently I'm in this kind of mood...call it uplifting I guess.

7) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah: Most over-used word in this thread has to be gorgeous, but how else do you describe this one?

6) Chet Baker - Alone Together: From the best jazz album out there for my money: Chet. The emotion just drips from from it...there has never been a more unique horn player IMHO than Chet Baker

5) The Who - Baba O'Reilly: Talk about your anthem for a generation...

4) Ryan Adams - Come Pick Me Up: This song just does something for me.

3) Genesis - Supper's Ready: From the Seconds Out album...one of my favorites

2) The Beatles - A Day in the Life: What more needs to be said??

1) The Beatles - Hey Jude: It's not a particularly complex tune, but I've always cranked it up any time it's come on. In fact, I'm going to go listen to it now.

Suede - My Dark Star

Elliott Smith - Happiness

Andy Partridge - End of the Pier

Echo and the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon

Elton John - The Last Song

Barenaked Ladies - If I Had $1,000,000

The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith

U2 - One

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen

Jackson Browne - These Days

I'd pick them pretty much at random, kind of like now. However, the world won't end until December 21, 2012 anyway, so I've plenty of time to decide.

Great choice! Nothing is more "Mr. Bungle" than that track. Quote:

great thread! i especially like the countdown-idea from 10 to 1...
but i'll rather work on my list a little instead of just posting the first hallelujas that come to my mind (though jeff buckley's glorious rendition is bound to be on it)

btw, elrod-tom, apparently stephen king finds 'hey jude' very apocalyptical, too - it even survives when "the world moves on" (in part one of 'the dark tower')

4. Sonic Youth - Diamond Sea - from A Thousand Leaves

eh? Either I didn't properly rip/label it, or there is no such song on A Thousand Leaves. Of course I could look at the CD, which is ten feet away, but I'm too lazy to get off my butt.

Well, considering it would be the end of the world, I'd want to listen to things that were, in my mind, the most beautiful... in no particular order:

1. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick part 1
2. The Beatles - Revolution 9
3. Pink Floyd - San Tropez
4. Todd Rundgren - One More Victory
5. Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
6. Jefferson Airplane - You Me & Pooneil
7. John Lennon - Imagine
8. Yes - And You and I
9. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
10. Neil Young - After the Goldrush

Not the least bit my "favorite songs", but definitely the last tunes I'd want to hear. They define the favorite years of my life, and they, in my mind, hold much more significance than my 'favorites', mostly being complex, 20-minute-plus jazz/fusion pieces.

Hehehe, yeah it's the 20 minute closer from Washing Machine. Amazing song. There was a radio edit that leaves out the masterful extended feedback drenched guitar jam. Feels almost like you're in a waterfall of colors and sounds. Really one of the best things they've done, unless you're in a hurry to get somewhere

EDIT: Guess I should add a few songs of my own, so without much thought here's a quick 10 ...

Brian Eno - Baby's On Fire
T-Rex - Telegram Sam
Talking Heads - The Big Country
David Bowie - Rebel Rebel
Velvet Underground - I'm Waiting For The Man
Built To Spill - Would Hurt A Fly
Neil Young - Don't Let It Bring You Down
The Beatles - Sun King
The Kinks - Victoria
Yo La Tengo - Blue Line Swinger

Bonus track: Bob Dylan - Girl From The North Country (with or without Johnny Cash)
