I have a pair of the old(ish) Sony 848s which now seem to be dying. I want to replace them with another pair of earbuds (i can't have the isolation of canalphones since i'll be wearing them at work). It seems that the ATH-CM7i's have a good reputation.

I'll be running them out of a Rio Karma (sometimes a Dell DJ, but only for low quality archived talk radio broadcasts) and occasionally the crappy chipset soundcard of the Dell computer at work (i can't do anything about that). The Karma may be matched with a Super Mini Moy, but usually not, the Super Mini Moy doesn't seem to add much.

I really liked the bass of the 848s. I think that it was actually more of a mid-bass hump, but that was fine for me. Since there will be some outside noise, details won't be that well heard anyway. But, i liked the way that it seemed like i could feel the bass response of the 848s, and would like to achieve that aspect with my new set.

The ATH-CM7ti's seem to run about $159, a price i'm willing to pay, even if it is a bit high, so long as the earphones sound like an improvement over my 848s and all of the lesser (bundled) models out there.

Does anyone out there support this plan of mine. Audiocubes doesn't seem to have the greatest return policy in the world, and i would prefer to avoid that hassle, should the earphones be a disappointment.

Thanks.

The ATH-CM7ti's are actually quite good. If you compare them to the E2c, which I see you have, the differences would be that the 7ti would have less mid bass and more high end. When you first get the earphones there isn't much bass nor high end but as you break them in, they begin to sound better.
These earphones are good if you listen to them in a quiet environment as they offer no isolation. Another thing is that if you have big ears then these things would tend to fall out quite easily which is why I'm still using the E5c when I'm on the go.

you can also consider the ec7 if you are thinking about the cm7ti. i find the ec7 to be much more comfortable than the cm7. from what i remember, they're lighter than the cm7 and because of the clip portion, they stay more securely in your ear. also, because of the clip, they help you keep them in a more optimal position in your ear.

when i auditioned both buds at the store, i remember that the ec7 were warmer and less harsh sounding than the cm7ti. the bass also sounded like it went deeper but i don't remember if they were stronger than the cm7ti. in the end, i went with the ec7 because of comfort and also because i found the sound more enjoyable.

can't comment about the Audio Technicas, but the E888's are loads better than the E848's. the bass is much more natural sounding than the E848's, which i think sounds too boomy... although the E888's still exhibit a little mid-bass hump. it has the bass characteristics of the E848's, but a lot less exaggerated. as for midrange and treble, the difference between E888's and E848's are like night and day. the E848's sounds extremely muddy, the E888's are clear, and has a very musical and sweet midrange.

as fragile as the E888's seem to be, my oldest pair is five years old and still going strong... unlike the four E848's i had over a span of a year and a half.

Speaking of crummy sony earphones, I have four pairs of EX71's myself

Most would aggree that the CM7ti's are an improvement over E888's, so comparing to the E848 shouldn't pose much of a problem.
