I have only tried grado's, sennheisers, shure, etc... but now the stax electrostat is intriguing me. Do these offer better sound?

I would be listening to vinyl, some digital music and listening to recorded conversations for work, main genres I like are psychedelic / prog... I'm looking at the 4040 006 system on ebay:

STAX SRS-4040 Signature System II - eBay (item 200341685873 end time Jun-11-09 14:52:56 PDT)

Are there better deals to be found, with either better ones for the same price or the same for cheaper? If I didn't like them, is the re-sale market pretty good?

You won't go wrong with Stax

Try looking for the FS section to find a used setup, would be much cheaper than buying new. And in case you don't like the sound, just simply re-sell it at the price you buy.

I just got a vintage Staxen set for myself this week and I expect it tomorrow or so... if you chose carefully around FS or the bay you can score something on the cheap just to get your feet wet.
Read the Stax thread for great info or ask for help there to get you started. I figured a used set wouldn't hurt my wallet (much :-\) so even if it's not what I'm really into I can expect to sell it at no loss or so. Good luck!

I also have been intrigued by electrostatics for a while but never listened to them until CanJam09. I loved their sound, even better than the HD800's.
Granted I could not do any critical comparisons but I did go back and forth from HeadRoom's great systems (HD800, balanced) to several Staxes. I was captivated with their sound (they had so many: 404's, 007's, using a variey fo amplifiers including Justin's BH, although I did not listen to the Woo system). I also compared them with the HD650's and 600 at HeadRoom. (They sounded very dark and lacked treble. did not like them).
Once I knew what they sounded like, I started looking patiently for a good deal here at Headfi.
I just bought the same system used from HiFlight although I have not received it yet. I paid 850.00 dollars for it. If you look around head-fi you will find some great prices if you don't mind buying used.
