Should I go with Audio-Technica ATH-A500 or Sony MDR-V6/7506?

I'm in a tought decision right now. I've narrowed my closed headphone options down to these two cans. Both isolate well, are comfortable (v6+beyer pads), drivable by protable (both 64 ohms). From searching threads I think the A500 has better mids and highs, and the V6 has more powerful extended bass as opposed to the A500's tight, rolling-off, bass. I read a lot about V6's from searching threads, but didn't get as many impressions of the A500's as I would like. Can you guys help me?

Have heard neither of them, so I can't comment, though the general impressions from the threads I read is that the V6 is somewhat hyped, even to sound in the same league as a DT770. Though I also see people judging that it is a phone with too much bass, on the tip to being boomy/overwhelming. The HD-25 would also fit in above them, very well for what you are looking for, but again depends on how much you want to spend....

I guess not many people own A500's. Well, how about A55's? They're only $5 cheaper than A500's at audiocubes.

you should really try to attend a meet. before going, ask the rest of the guys to bring their portable stuff.

you really should listen. you might end up with a set of eggos or the DT250-80 or any other headphone, instead.

as one who got burned by the AD10, i can not advocate a ATH purchase without first listening. if you bought the A500 or A55, and you didn't like them, who would buy it? if however you bought a V6 or DT250, someone is more likely to buy it.

It you're willing to order ATH's from Japan, why not Ultrasone HIFI650's from Meier Audio in Germany? If you want to see if they would be good for you, just do a search in the forums here. I'm ordering some myself and of course will be posting the requisite first, second, and third impressions when I get them.

Edit: Whoops, I remember now you said something about a price limit. Many of us Headfiers don't understand the meaning of budget - unless it's our own, and even then it's a mystery to us.

Can you tell me the reason why you narrow down to these 2 brand/model?

I have Sen 590/497, I borrow a V6 for 2 weeks and hate it. It sounds like BOSE speakers, 100 hz peak and bright upper mid, not neutral at all.

Well, for one thing, I was offered a deal for the A500's (4 months old) for $80 shipped, which is $30 cheaper than ordering them off audiocubes. I'm not a big fan of canal phones. Not comfortable to me.
I really need a good set of sub $100, easy-to-drive, closed headphones for college so I wont disturb people around me, so I was down to V6/7506, A55, A500, and HD280. I chose these mainly because I was looking primarily for good bass. The A500 seemed to be the successor to A55 with the D.A.D.S, and from reading countless V6 vs. HD280 threads, I feel that the V6 suits my tastes better. The beyer pads are a must, of course.
