Hey guys,

Looking to upgrade my tv programming. Anyway, Dish is offering a HD package (27 HD channels, 100 SD channels, free HD dvr and installation) for $29.99 for 10 months (then $49.99). Wondering if any of you use Dish and would be able to give me some pros and cons compared to Comcast.

Thanks,
Najib

I've had Dish for many years and have been happy with it.
It always works unless there is a sever downpour, but then it comes right back.
They don't continuously jack the price up like cable does.
The HD channels look great (you will need a DVI or HDMI input to get the best picture).
The HD receiver (at least the one I have) can pick up the local TV stations digital broadcasts over an antenna so you don't have to pay extra for them. These are broadcast in HD during prime time.

My brother is leaving Dish for DirecTV, Dish royally hacked him off.

For ten months they have been paying an extra maintenance fee for service in case of a problem. They were told that moving the antenna in case of interference was included in that fee.

Now that a large tree has started to interfere with the signal, Dish told them that it was not their problem and my brother had to do it himself.

Not to mention that the service guy who put the antenna up in the first place put the thing on the roof, screwing through the roof shingles and then put just about an entire tube of silicone on it to seal it up. A very sloppy job.

Just my .02

I had them. My DVR quit. I sent it to them, and they said the warranty was voided due to dust, and I owed them $200. Dust gets in all components. The only cleaning that works is disassembly which voids the warranty. Lose-lose situiation.

Customer service sucks.

My parents have the Dish network, and I absolutely hate it when I am there.

1. The house wiring is bizarre. For every two TV's you have one box, with the second television wired in series. The servicemen also did a crappy job of laying the wire thru the cellar, and I had to call them back to clean it up. I still haven't figured out how to connect a DVD player or VCR. I'm afraid to touch anything.

2. The remote is the most confusing & least intuitive I've ever seen. There are so many useless buttons, and it is extremely easy to press one that puts the tv in a state from which it is a major pain to recover. Forget about using it in the dark, or if you have large fingers. If someone ever designs an uber-simple Dish network remote, with large-numbered backlit buttons, without all of the other superfluous crap, they'd probably make a million dollars.

3. For some reason, the television has to be tuned to channel 73 for it all to work. Now that's intuitive - not!

4. Channels change themselves, often at the most inopportune times (like the last two minutes of a show or sports event!). It seems that a mild breeze on the dish is all it takes

.

There are other minor quibbles, but you get the idea. In short, you couldn't offer me a cheap enough deal to get the Dish network for myself. Heck, you couldn't pay me.

I've always had cable for tv & broadband, and it has never let me down, nor required me to read any manual to setup or operate, by itself or with any of my gear.

jpelg,
1 You could have ended up with a mess like that from anyone's installation. Some contractors are better than others.
I've had cable guys run the cable through a window sill in the past!

2 & 3 There's nothing wrong with the remote as far as I can see. You can always switch to a backlit universal if it bothers you.
I suspect the box is connected to the antenna input since you need to have it on a particular channel to work. If the box was properly connected to one of the inputs rather than the antenna connection, you will get a better picture and won't have issues if you hit the wrong button.

4 I think they may have timers inadvertently set, dish movement would not cause a channel change, just a loss of signal.

TV sucks these days. Spend your hard earned money on HEADFI related things. Once you own a pair of headphones, you get to keep them. You don't rent them for a fee per month. Much more satisfying.

All service is done through independant contractors. The lowest bidders.

*We lost service, dish was damaged. Waited 3 weeks for the repair guy. Guy shows up with no ladder, says will have to send somebody else with a ladder..... maybe 2 more weeks. So we got cable (Installed that week by actual cable company employees).

The Dish Remote was pretty good I recall. And I liked their DVR.

Also expect @$20 in taxes & fees on top of the $29.99

I can't remember off the top of my head (Haven't used it in 2 years). But the bill was never less than $10 more than they said it would be.

Also after I cancelled they mailed me a new set-top box(?!?!). I sent it back, and they billed my credit card $150 for the "restocking fee". I still have the first box in a closet. Just a weird last month with them.

1. What OTA antennas do you use? Any good brands? Price?

2. What additional fees would amount to $20 extra?

1. Zenith SilverSensor. It's the gold standard for ota's.

1. Your best bet is to start here. You will be able to find the correct antenna for your location in relation to the stations you watch.

2. Don't know what he's talking about. There is tax, that's all I get charged.
