I've only used 1GB or 2GB mp3 players for the past few years, but now I want to upgrade to a 30 gig. I've been looking at the Zune and it looks like the best deal. All of my songs and videos on my computer are in WMP formats. So how is the audio/picture/video quality on a Zune? How is the bass? How clear are pictures and videos? And should I even get it? Right now I'm using a Samsung YP-T9. It's amazing, but only 2GB, and I have to convert videos into a certain format so I can get the software to convert THAT into another format, and it's way too much of a hassel.

A side note. When I rip audio from a CD I just use WMP, but it doesn't give me options like what sizes I want to rip them at, is there a programt that lets me do this?

The zune is a great player! It has excellent sound and great video/picture playback! The screen size is definatley a plus, and it is very clear so you can't go wrong there...overall, it is a great player.

WMP does allow you to determine the sizes of the CD rip files. check under options. It only allows you to change bitrates, but that obviously affects the size of the files.

The Zune does sound good, but not as good as the T9. Though I only spent about 5 minutes with the T9, it still sounded warmer through my E4c's.

However, the Zune still sounds good and is definitely a good choice.

Oh ok. And the difference isn't that drastic is it? And I don't really use super high quality headphones, just Sennheiser eh 150s and JVC marshmallows.

Don't forget that every Zune sold, a fee goes to Universal Music Group's pocket.

My only complaint with the Zune is that the program you have to sync it with is kinda bad. Otherwise, I think it's a great player. Granted, I'm no audiophile, but I agree with everyone else here that says the sound that comes out of it is pretty great.

Just wondering is the sound quality on par with that of an Iaudio X5? I use to have an Archos Gmini XS202s, but ended up selling it simply because it wasn't doing my Shure E500s any justice. Thus if anyone has any experience of the Zune and E500 combination i'd be interested in knowing what you thought.

Also, since i only really have the money to buy one MP3 player in the coming year, should i get the current gen Zune, or perhaps wait and see if the X5 successor, or Zune 2.0 are any good?

*Quite unsure about whether to buy or not, because as much as i like my X5, the 2 hour battery life that it has now, even with Rockbox installed has just become impossible to live with (turning it on 'n off seems to drain about 20 mins as well sometimes)

Well should I not even bother with a Zune now and just wait for the 2.0?

The Archos 404 is an even better deal, looks great, and is loaded with features. I love mine.

Heard that the Archos PVPs aren't too great in the sound department with high end head-phones though...
