Hi Guys,

I've reached the point where I'm considering a replacement for my current Theta Pearl/Audio Alchemy DTI 2.0/Audio Alchemy DDE 3.0 setup. I thought I was going to get the Philips 963SA but then I found out it doesn't support DVD Audio.

My question is, should I wait another 6-12 months to see how the sacd -- dvd-audio war plays out? Will a high quality, affordable universal player emerge anytime soon?

Or, should I just keep my current setup thinking to myself that it's still pretty good and not upgrade at all?

Thanks all!

I just saw a review of a new marantz universal player that retailed for $1500. No idea what model was or what street price will be.

BoyElroy,

How old is your current rig?? How much has the technology changed and improved since then? And how happy are you with what you own??

These questions should help you narrow down the need/want for a new purchase. If you're itching to spend some dough, and can afford to do so, by all means have at it.

As to the war of one format versus another, that will never end. I bet that they release another contender right around the time that they narrow down the other two formats, and it will be better/stronger/faster/sound better, etc. and will once again throw everyone into turnoil.

Your safest bet is with what you own the most of, or all of in some cases. Do you own anything other than redbook CDs?? If not, they will continue to make redbook for years to come, and by then the tech will have taken another quantum leap forward and the point will be moot. And you'll regret buying some other expensive format to upgrade your redbook cds to either SACD or DVD-A, only to have to buy them all over again in some new format!!

Hope this helps!!!

I think you should keep what you have.

Format does not audio quality sound make.

When a new format does come out, and there are audiophile grade components out there I can afford, and my LP and CD collection are destroyed, and the new format has 10's of thousands of titles......

well, maybe.

Good choice!!! Now if more of us could be happy with what we had, enjoyed the music, and bought more music with the extra money........... :p

Ditto Servinginecuador,

I suppose if you can obtain a SIGNIFICANT improvement in sound to all of your music, an upgrade is worthwhile. I struggle sometimes (to be honest, often) in being content with what I already have, but IMO, to upgrade to something that will allow a few new CD's sound better, while most of my music will sound the same doesn't make much sense. I thought about buying a new $1200 player, but decided on a $600 used player, and having a nice budget to go out and find some new music, and I've been having a blast.

I say wait for the upsampling players to hit the streets.Once you have heard upsampling I think you will be sold on it.

Glad to hear you got your priorities straght at least!!! I also feel that unless something is a significant upgrade to the sound it's probably not worth getting. It's better to wait for something big in technology, liek upsampling as tuberoller says, and then take teh plunge. In the mean time, buy more music and sit back and enjoy!!!

The best way to kill the upgraditis bug is be satisfied with what you have!! That and stay away from this site!!!!
