Should I be looking for bass heavy headphones or ones with better mids and highs?

I typically listen to Rock, Metal, Punk (Eg. Queen, Dead Kennedys, Billy Talent, The Clash, The Police, etc.) that sort of thing. Anyways, I was wondering what I should be looking for when I purchase headphones, should I be looking at headphones with stronger bass, and lows, or should I be looking for a pair that has better mids and highs? I guess what I'm asking is what would you consider the most important sounds for my taste in music, if that makes any sense? I'm not nessisarilly looking for headphones or speakers or anything at the moment, but it'd be nice to know for the future.

Your individual preference for a particular sonic signature (more or less bass or treble) could be the greater determining factor.

Then also, depends on what you like emphasized (or not) in the particular music, too. Some people like the bass line to stand out more. Some people like it when the lead guitar sounds great, but could care much less about the bass line.

You might consider some Grado headphones. They are a love 'em or leave 'em kind of headphone. But those that love them think they are fantastic for rock. Worth trying out to see if you fall in the love 'em class :)

Nearly all quality headphones actually have some boost in the upper bass response. This helps bring out the bass drum more, but of course you might it needs more very low bass response as they won't sound as deep as when a subwoofer reinforces speakers for the same notes. In any case, given nearly all (or at least the dynamic drivers) have some boost there anyway, pick one with the smoothest response curve. Even if it's not necessarily the flattest remember that a plateau is easier to correct then a narrow peak, or worse, a narrow ravine. Response graphs are available on Inner Fidelity and www.headphone.com.
