should an amp make make these sounds when turned on and off?

when i turn it on i get a "thack" sound in my phones.... when i turn it off i get a pause, then a "thhhooomP" sound.

is that normal?

Mine doesn't do that...in fact I have to wait a little bit after I turn the amp on to hear anything. First quiet, then softly in the right channel, then softly in the left channel, then the volume climbs to normal. Tubes are weird

i think this is what most people call it turn on/off pop. depending on the magnitude of the popping, it can be potentially damaging to the voice-coil of the drivers, so might be a good idea to unplug the headset before powering up/down.

When you plug headphones into a running amp or source, doesn't it run the risk of shorting or damaging the phones in some way?
