Mine doesn't do that...in fact I have to wait a little bit after I turn the amp on to hear anything. First quiet, then softly in the right channel, then softly in the left channel, then the volume climbs to normal. Tubes are weird

i think this is what most people call it turn on/off pop. depending on the magnitude of the popping, it can be potentially damaging to the voice-coil of the drivers, so might be a good idea to unplug the headset before powering up/down.

Switch-on and switch-off thump can damage cans. It shouldn't, 99.99% of the time, but killing some cans for t he sake of not unplugging them would be upsetting.

When you plug headphones into a running amp or source, doesn't it run the risk of shorting or damaging the phones in some way?

Some of my amps do and others do not. Heck my MF did until I had them modded by PinkFloyd and the switching on/off went away.

My AV receiver automatically mutes on startup for about 3-4 seconds, so I don't experience this

i did this to a pair of grado sr60s =/
