My non-audiophile friend just started using their RCA discman they got from their mom for Christmas, to replace her Sony D-131. After the first week, the consensus is that: batteries (4 AA!) last WAY shorter than the Sony (using 2 AA), the metal contacts for the batteries bent right away, it skips when not even moving, won't play in temp below 0ºC (it's Canada, walking around outside), and sounds like crap.
I just thought that's funny. You get what you pay for I guess.
And yet the D-131 (that was bought at discount, refurbished) plays and plays.
I wish I had that luck with my DE-445. Actually, no, I love my CT-590 now - 2 weeks and I haven't heard a skip yet!
