IIRC, the way digital amps work means that you don't need a separate D/A converter...

The report is on an 1-bit audio seminar. Sharp's 1-bit development was based on the work of a Dr. Yoshio Yamasaki at Waseda University. Eventually the uni, Sharp and Pioneer started an 1-bit audio consortium. This is the guy:

At the seminar Pioneer demo'ed the WSD (Waseda Stream Digtal), an 1-bit file format that's meant to be usable on computers and DVD/CD players (cross-platform?). The file format has no limit for the sampling rate and the number of channels.

Right now it's hard to see consumer use of 1-bit audio recording, but the developers hope to eventually make that happen. The demo used DVD-R/RW, but medium will not be limited. Pioneer modded an SACD player to make the prototype. There's no concrete detail on when/how they plan to launch products with the file format.

The show also features prototypes of 1-bit audio data transfer using USB (1.1) and IEEE1394 (FireWire), Windows app for making files, some speaker with liquid hydrogen that boasts 10 times the efficiency of existing speakers...

...Mark Levinson (!?) arguing that PCM adds stress upon the listener... and blind tests on the audience, using live recordings of a stradivarius (sp) and a cheap voilin...
