Shanling M6 Player - New version with ESS DACs coming soon

Hi everyone. First post here. Sorry if this has been asked before. How does the sound of the Shanling M6 compare to the Shanling Mx2 and do you think that the price difference is worth the difference for the M6 over the M2X based on the sound quality alone?

Noticeable improvements, the M6 runs smoother and faster now, and this volume level indicator on the left top, looks great! Thanks! :)
If I may suggest something, could you please provide some basic information in the options, digital filters section? Just to inform what sound signature gives a chosen filter.

If you are interested into technical background on the filters, there are many articles online going into how each of them can affect frequency range or ringing and how that should affect sound.

Otherwise, as any discussion in Audio, this is strongly individual. Some people will have strong preferences one way or other, you will find different descriptions for the same filter, some people will tell you they don't even hear difference.

For example, here is description of filters from AKM. If it's helpful or if it even makes sense, up to you.

I will say that in our company, short delay slow roll off is often preferred and set as default on some of our players. But my personal preference is at Sharp roll off.

@yorosello what changes do you mean specifically? Is it for better or for worse? I didn't notice any "aging" or decreasing in sound. I think @Shanling would commit a suicide doing something like this deliberately...

We never make changes to "Sound Quality" with firmware updates.
But that doesn't mean there aren't users reporting changes in sound with each firmware update.

After the last firmware update, my M6 has been unusable. Audio just cuts out I'd say almost 50% of the time, like if there wasn't enough bandwidth for a stream. That level of performance failure from an SD card is weird. Of course I did a system reset, reinstalled everything and still it keeps failing. I've been a loyal customer of Shanling DAPs for a few years now because of the value I perceived, but honestly, that's no longer the case.

@PopZeus But isn't it too emotional reaction? All devices sometimes break, and it affects single pieces, so maybe you should contact @Shanling and clarify this, send to service or else...
I haven't noticed any problems with mine after this update
Normally you'd have a point if I was basing my hot take on a single experience, but this M6 was already a replacement for a previously-purchased, faulty M6. And I've been frustrated with the lack of improvement to their Android platform while the company is releasing more expensive hardware based on that same flawed platform. Considering the Tidal streaming app seems to work fine, the problem this time seems to be something with either the Shanling music app or a flaw somewhere along the card reader path. If Shanling wants to address the issue, cool. Will they address all the other issues I have? Who knows? I'm tired of waiting to find out. I don't want to derail the thread too much, so I'll just leave it at that.

We are not seeing any other reports of such issue fter the latest update.

Can you please send me PM, to look onto this in more detail? Thanks

Just to sorta update the thread.... things seem to have magically sorted themselves out with my M6. I'm happy that doing a bunch of random things seems to have resolved the issue.

Only M5s got MQA support, we don't plan to add it to M2X at this time.

We have plans to bring MQA to other Shanling models, but can't share more details for now.

I see.
But i have a question, which will be pretty confusing.
Since M5s doesn't have MQA support last time & now received it via firmware, how many unfolding they will be able to do? Is it only going to be limited to the 1st unfolding (via software) or it will be more?

M5s acts as a MQA Full Decoder, so 3x unfolding.

Btw, I'm liking the new update to the Shanling Music Player, but ofc there is still some problem that hasn't been sorted out. But is there any plan to bring the new update to the app on the play store?
