I also own the m0 which i still use as a LDAC bluetooth player for my phone.
It's fantastic value that's for sure..
But i wanted something better for the home and the car when connected to an external dac.
So i bought the m5s.
In terms of sound quality, it's really fantastic snd better then the m0 for sure.
The only downside is the inability to use a Bluetooth remote to control it like a fiio remote.
It is troublesome most times when i want to skip tracks. I was excited about the m6 because its it
it's android and maybe that will finally be able to use a remote since the m5s cant...
But I've already been told by shanling it also can't
It might seem like a minor thing for most people but for that its important enough that i wont buy another shanling player.
Everyones needs are different. There are some products that don't support features that I want and unfortunately they are no longer in consideration.
I can tell you that my home system is using the Radson ES100 connected to my tube preamplifier. My M5S connects to it using LDAC which Im able to use to play my music files.
The Radson ES100 is special because there is no standalone product on the market that will do LDAC, have very low output impedance and a DSP EQ with app that doesn't degrade the sound quality. All this for $100 is unbelievable for the sound quality that is not currently available. I tied some stand alone DSPs with Bluetooth but they degrade the music and don't do LDAC.
With the EQ fictionality I was able to use a flat mic connected to my iPad using an mobile tools EQ app and do room correction. After the ES100 was tuned it improved the sound quality by a big margin. The seamless connection to the ES100 when I turn the player on and off just works without having to fumble around. I wish Shanling would improve their UP2 or UP4 to match the ES100 but for now the ES100 stands alone and is very much a head of its time.
