USA review tour for Shanling M5s and ME100 is open! Follow the link if you are interested.

Note: We have limited amount of M5s units right now, so it will only go to very few reviewers. So this tour will give you quite special access to our newest player.

Very nice DAP. Im really happy to get one in the future. I decided to get rid of my A & K device. Dont get me wrong. I really like it but i dont like the brand and their principles. The Shanling threads are always fun and always stuff is going on. Infos, updates... very lifely. This is what a customer wants besides a good product.

Until i get my hands around the M5s im enjoying the little M0. Got enough power to drive my IMR R1 and Denon Ah-D5200  But i want to have a balanced output for my home player.

The only thing i would personally wish for would be a Shanling DAP with headphone connectors on top of the device and a reduced length.

Just software setting, no dedicated line-out.

We will be glad to implement Spotify. But since they have like 180 milion users on phones, seems they have no need, so no interest, in implementing such function on some small third party system.

Luckily, you can stream from your phone over BT. LDAC is claimed to be good for CD quality, so it can do with Spotify quality just fine.

Not yet implemented in any of our devices. But looking into it.
Good point, many don't realise that even Spotify premium if streamed over LDAC should have minimal quality loss.

@Shanling I know this is the M5s thread, but based on this release is the next M3 likely to also reduce in size, and maybe release in 2019? Also very curious with your plans for M1 (add balanced? add wifi? newer version of ess9218p if ESS launches it?) after the success of the M0. I didn't like the M1, but because of how good the M0 is I've sold my R3 and am using a V20 while waiting to see what you come up with

Cheers!

So far we are not exactly sure if we will bring whole range of M1.2.3 back and how will they look.

Question for @Shanling and current users about Wi-Fi on M5S.
The unit is supposed to have 2.4 WiFi and DLNA capability. Has this been successfully tested and if so how solid is the signal connection and which DLNA servers have worked? Is JRiver one of them?

DLNA feature isn't in final shape yet, can be little bit tricky to make it work in current version.
Our software team are testing it with some Chinese app and it works fine. I tested it with Foobar2K and UPnP controller and it works fine. Tested with my Android phone, running some random BubbleUPnP app and managed to stream music from phone into M5s without problem.

It would be great in future units to have the engineers pay a lot of attention to the quality of the "line out". Not that I have any complain about current designs, but I loved it when my M2 had a dedicated line out jack.

I also sold my R3 and hope the M5S comes out to be a great unit.

Seems to me there is room for one but not two units between the M0 and M5S.

Shanling, Since you have heard the new M5S yourself I'd like to know where in the world of DAP's you would place the new unit?

Better than the new A&K SE100?
Better than the Fiio X7II?
Better than the FiiO X5II?

I'm not picky I just would like a ballpark guess where the M5S will fit in. Thanks.

Judging sound quality of M5s in comparison to other devices, that's job for reviewers, not for brand representative.

I don't think he can really answer this question even though he has an idea how it would be ranked among these. Juat wait for another month or two and there will be plenty of reviews and comparisons.
All good things for those who wait.

Thanks @Shanling, it's good to know the company is thinking hard about its lineup. Please don't have many overlapping products with slightly different niche/designs like Fiio...

I hope there will be at least one model between M0 and M5s - that will allow people who want more than the M0 but can't afford the M5s to enjoy great sound. It will also provide good competition with DX120.

I think you are absolutely right here. But maybe some words about the tonality? Will it be more reference, analytical sounding or is it on the analog, warmer side ? What was your goal here (compared to your other players)?

With a DX150 going around $400 and DX200 down to $700 makes me think twice...

Why though? DX150 is quite laggy and honestly we don't know how the M5s would sound yet, but following Shanling's track records and the information about the design, this can be a bang for buck base on sound alone.
Will definitely try to get my hands on one when I have the opportunity.

@Shanling, I may have missed it but does the M5S have HiBy control capability??

If it's anything like the m0 then no. It will have shanlings version of it though as they are developing the software from the ground up themselves.
