Shanling M0 - Smallest Hi-Res Portable Player - New Firmware V3.6

The m0, pretty much the only DAP I have after downsizing and simplifying, is what I take with on a 1-2 months yearly vacation to Asia. Because of the pesky Covid it hasn’t seen any use.

Dusted it off and after charging the fully discharged battery it came to life. So far it’s holding charge as should, good.

Plugged the AT AWKT, just to see how it would sound, and was greeted with a very warm tone, warm yet still very detailed. Dynamics and slam is what I was missing. Then again this was to be expected as I mainly listen to the AWKT using ADI-2DAC fs.

Also tried the AT AWAS with the same result but more on the lush side. It’s weird and am liking the synergy more, a better sound characteristic match is what I can think of.

I still like how tiny and capable the m0 is and it will still be my take to vacay DAP.

Lately I have seen posts about battery issues not holding charge which can be concerning in the future. But for what’s it’s worth and the nature of how the m0 is used, mainly using my AT DSR9BT via USB, I am more than satisfied of how the batt life has been. Since I am also lower than normal on the charge cycle count it should and hope would have legs for more years down the road.

M0 + AWKT via Sennheiser adapter.

Hi @Shanling, few questions:
1) Does M0 support usage as a transport for a dac?
2) I have an E1DA 9038S dongle and I'm considering M0. Would it work in a setup like that?
3) Can it control hw volume of the e1da dongle (UAC2.0)?
4) Would it function as transport as well when streaming LDAC to it? so phone > ldac > m0 > usb > e1da dongle
5) if any of the above are not possible, would shanling Q1 be a better option?

Is there audiobook support already implemented?

Unfortunately no. We hoped that it might get implemented one day, but software team only got us playback speed control, no other support for audiobooks/podcasts.

1) Yes, it can be used as transport for USB DAC.
2) M0 is mainly designed to be used with self powered DACs(Battery or AC), not with these small DACs demanding power from device. So compatibility can vary, depending on power demands of the given USB DAC.
3) Yes, our players are able to control volume of connected USB DACs (We added it for USB-C headphones). Just make sure you have it turned on in settings (USB Audio Output)
4) Yes, it can be used as LDAC receiver -> USB Output
5) Q1 is able to deal with more power requirements from USB DACs, so it's little bit more likely it will work with your DAC.

Thank you very much for that. Could you provide me the max current that M0 and Q1 can supply on the 5V out? If I recall correctly, the 9038S dongle needs on average 80-100mA to work properly, with some peaks nearing 125mA, but that's during dsd playback, which I won't be using.

Nice. I am getting a "FV. Check Error" message though. Has anyone been able to successfully upgrade?

Did you put the .zip file on the sd card, rather than the ‘update.bin’ file?
