Shanling M0 - Smallest Hi-Res Portable Player - New Firmware V3.6

Another faulty M0 here. It was defective out of the box with the same 'ghost screen' issues shown above. It's like it's recording phantom screen presses and it's completely unusable, can't even go to the settings to update the firmware (if that is potentially the issue).

Another issue is that I shipped it to Australia from the Shanling store on the Amazon.com.au site. But it's all in Chinese. So even if I could use the screen, I would still struggle to change the language.

Pretty disappointed to be honest. Even if I get a replacement model that works, how long will it be until the screen issues reappear.

EDIT: forgot to mention that I tried the pinhole reset, but that didn't fix anything. Seems to be a hardware problem.

That's really sad. You would be eligible for returns right?
I didn't know that shanling had a store on Amazon Australia. Have been getting stuffs from AliExpress which takes a while to get. I don't think people check Amazon much here is Australia, after the initial issues. With all the hype and Amazon didn't seem to offer much offers/discounts initially, but now I feel it's picking up now.

I got my M0 a week ago; So far I'm loving the device. It's taken everything I've thrown at it and performed with only a few freezes and even then it reboots so quickly it's not really a bother. Interface is extremely snappy and responsive. I've run into the common issues people are seeing but the screen tare hasn't been a big detractor as the interface still performs.

My only complaint is the lack of scrolling text; It's very hard to navigate via the file menu, or artist and album, this feature is sometimes needed for compilations and long band names or close to the same file names as the device library does not seem to take into consideration the contextual file location into adding an album/artist. An option to have the text scroll, and how fast would be an excellent feature for this device. It would shorten the navigation mistakes and hunt/search that are currently going on in 1.5 firmware slightly, at least for me. Also some people instead of creating playlists, use file structures to easily navigate large file collections and play quickly. A-Z Combined with A-Z Sub Dirs (Main Dir <Artist> Sub dir <album> via file is often quicker than A-Z from Album or Artist.

Even if Shanling releases file sorting procedures/order of operation so we can create our own file renaming schemes, some usage cases will still run into issues. 'Open all' in my music is fairly useless currently without knowing HOW to sort each and every file.

As for the device itself; everyone that has seen mine so far now wants one. That's fairly high praise from my casual friends that want -any- decent portable audio device for a fair price.

Shanling has done excellent work, and well done putting your firmware in house and taking feedback from boards like this.

i've tried every codec on m0, an always maximun volume, no music comes out whatsoever

Since we don't have your Smsl to test, I can't say much more to this. We tested it with wide range of devices, headphones, speakers, adapters, M0 worked fine.

Since M0 has clock function. Is it possible to has clock mode like smartwatch?

One more question, if HibyLink like application has been developed, is it possible to use like this, pair BT headphone with M0 and control M0 via smartphone with app?

Since the screen is the most battery consuming part of Shanling M0, watch function would be quite bad idea.
Such function would need bothway communication at the same time, not sure if M0 is really build for that.

Does anyone else have latency issues in DAC mode?
Even in Low Latency and minimum latency I am getting about .4 seconds lag. Is this normal?

It's unfortunately limitation of USB solution used on our players.

Just added a little update with Line Out test results (paired up with E12A, updated Wired/Wireless section of the review, on the last page). Makes me wonder, since ESS DAC combines amp stage, if they actually bypass the amp to have a direct DAC output, instead of just raising volume up to the max. Either way, output is very clean, transparent, and no clipping.

Since it's combined chip, it's not direct line out from DAC.

Having a hard time burning my M0 in. It's either locking up or powering down on me.

The only power setting left on right now is Idle Mode @ 1min. But since the M0 is playing files all night long, it's certainly not Idle. What's going on?

I have my pink noise track on repeat loop. Is this just a bug?

Well, if you want to burn in, my recommendation is to turn off both Idle modes.
I used my unit for some battery life tests without problem, so I don't think it's software bug.
Can you try to see, if you will have same problems with different files and while the unit is not on charger?

This is a must for me. I hope they fix this

Support for external playlists coming in future firmware.

Firstly, sorry that this defective unit reached you and Jackboy, this is of course covered by warranty, please reach out to your seller for replacement unit.

Talking about seller, Shanling doesn't sell directly outside of China, so there is nothing like "Shanling Amazon" store. Our only official retailer in Australia is Jaben.
Going to Amazon.com.au, I see only offer on M0 from Shenzhen Audio, Chinese seller, which might explain why the unit was set up in Chinese.

We have some units running on since January and none of them developed this issue after months of usage. If we encounter such issue, it was caused by faulty hardware part and was apparent immediately.

Scrolling text, did you know you can swipe left on file to make the text scroll?

Open all is sorted in alphabetical order.

Yesterday I finally got this video showing some basic operations of UI

Apologies, the seller is Shenzhen. I got the names mixed up.

I can get a refund. But unfortunately don't have time to wait for a replacement as I'm moving overseas in a month and can't guarantee that a replacement would arrive before I leave.

First thanks for the video and the reply.

second. In regards to the scrolling text feature, again I'm asking for -automatic- option and the ability to increase the speed of the scrolling text. Not only is it extremely hard to get the scrolling text to work, it's not accurate trying to get 1 of those lines to scroll or very fast trying to get this text to scroll. Often times it takes 3-4 attempts and I've been practicing. Its either a navigation bug or my own user error but... Often times trying to do this feature it ends up scrolling up or down or moving in and out of the menus; When you do get it to work it repeatably will work, and then just 'lose' the ability and you'll be stuck scrolling up, down or left/right in out of menus. I cannot figure out what makes this feature happen consistently, if I'm waiting too long or not long enough etc. Ideal usage case is ability to view that screen, with minimal interaction when having to decide on the selection. It should be 'serving' me this text if I wanted this feature, vs having to hunt on a extremely tiny screen (That I love btw, it's just a matter of ease of use).

However the experience could be described as frustrating from an end user perspective even after watching your video 5 or 6 times. Also please think about giving this to someone older even in their 50's or 60's. They can navigate but the scrolling text would be a wanted feature vs repeat poking.

Also, it's not sorted in Alphabetical order it's sorted in Numerical then Alphabetical, so some tracks with 01-0X in the front get placed at the top of ALL, and mixed in among the other tracks like that.

Sorry, but no plans for automatic scrolling, it would be kind of bewildering to see whole screen scrolling at the same time.
Right swipe on text is the best solution we come up with after development. Maybe it's just practice, but I can get it working 10/10 times. Also, on next firmware, we little bit adjusted touch sensitivity, so it might help you.
But if you come up with some alternative that could work, we will gladly implement it.

Yes, we placed numbers before alphabet. Other special symbols are after alphabet. Which way would be preferable for you?

Honestly to me, it doesn't matter how the numbers are sorted if we know it; personally I'll just go in, change the files around to work for the player. Long as it's set that way and we know the Number, Alpha, Special Symbol. But Perhaps others will want something different? Where special symbol would be in-front of the sorting algo giving the user ability select/priority sorting outside of the favorites and playlist (maybe user is listening to a weekly podcast or compile and insert special symbol in the file name because they want to get to it quickly in the menu).

Again, thank you for the reply; If scrolling text was easier or slightly faster than it is, automatic wouldn't matter OR if I had the ability to scroll more than 1 line with the swipe feature. Vs it resetting every time you do press to scroll another line say up to 3 lines before it resets the first. This way I could swipe multiple lines assuming precision and then select the correct line i need, it's still hunt and peck; but at least quicker and more efficient than single line at a time. Additionally I greatly appreciate the time and input you are giving me towards this discussion but I totally understand if it's not possible. A diagonal swipe could also trigger multiple lines to scroll if that's a gesture possible. However that could be reserved for something better like mass selection/highlight with a screen this size.

I just noticed some how there is a highlight and selection feature as well but it was only because I was trying to get the text to scroll and it scrolled down and highlighted multiple files (turned those selected to purple). Unsure how that happened and am unable to recreate it again. It's really just a learning curve.

Does Windows detect M0 device to load SD card? Thinking about trying M0 w/ Andro, does anyone know if it'll hiss?

Yes, when you connect M0 to Windows, it will show up as disk and you can transfer files easily.

I tested with Andromeda and I got zero hiss from M0.

Also from Twister's impressions:

And I found zero hissing, passing Andromeda test with flying colors.

Nice hands

Since the screen is the most battery consuming part of Shanling M0, watch function would be quite bad idea.

So leave the screen off. User presses the button to see the time.

There is a significant demand for a wrist band. If Shanling doesn't make one, some third party will do it guaranteed. I'm amazed that you guys are ignoring this.
