Hey everyone,

I don't have many posts but I have lurked here for quite a while and I've noticed one thing about the headphone forum. It seems that two predominant types of posts exist: A "what-to-buy" headphone recommendation type post (either by new or seasoned members), and all other types of posts.

It seems new users find it more convenient to post a new thread despite the fact that their question can easily be answered thousands of times through a search. In fact, at a quick glance, it seems that almost half of the posts in this forum are those involving a question of what kind of headphone to buy.

So, why not create a new forum or sub-forum specifically for recommendation type posts? Then, this forum would be cleared of clutter so discussion not involving recommendations or looking for new phones would be more efficient and user-friendly.

this idea was brought up b4. the main counter-argument was that without those "what should i buy?" threads, the headphone forum would wither away and die of boredom

Swordforum has a "Beginner" subforum where new members could as their questions, recommendations and such, and introduce themselves at the same time.

I am a lurker as well but getting to the point that I feel I can contribute a bit more. I was reading a similar post last week that covered this as well. The main concern with that post was that people were coming in and asking questions dealing with lower end cans or atleast less expensive (a bit of an elitist post in my opinion). Lots of threads for the best 50 dollar headphones to replace Ipod buds are a bit annoying. I think that everyone starts out at a cetain point and gets what they can afford or what level they are comfortable with but it does get annoying at times having to push through alot of these posts. I recommended that instead of price points that it was broken down it into more relative terms such as "beginner", intermediate, audiophile, and dream cans (the ones that are no longer produced for example) I think that alot of people put too much emphasis on the price of cans but it would be good to have a "sticky" thread that was just for this purpose. The real kicker is that people would have to start popping the thread link everytime that one of these question threads came up. I think that alot of people like myself gain alot of their hifi knowledge from this site...us lurkers have taken the time to gain the knowledge but alot of people are more throw it in and see what comes out from day one. I do think that part of what I enjoy about head.fi is all the assistance that people are willing to dole out...it gives sort of the positive enviroment that keeps us coming back and looking for that next step to make the music just a bit more enjoyable. I disagree with the threads that call for a seperate "headfi for beginners" as I think that the nuturing role alot of the "ole timers" represent on this site is important....maybe I take my headfi a bit too serious...

Good hunting and good luck...
