Hello, I have just discovered this site and I can tell it's going to be trouble. I have a high end home system with speakers but am new to headphones etc.

I am looking for a pair of headphones and amp to use while I listen to CDs and then play along on a drum set. Drums are quite loud and I am discovering that I may need a closed headphone or an in ear monitor.

I now have and am trying the Beyer 770-80, this year's model I believe. I am not really blown away by these and would like some recommendations on other closed headphones please.

I also have the Senn HD600 on loan, and AKG 701, the sound from these are much better than the Beyer 770, but they are an open design which allows for the drums to be heard too much causing me to raise the headphone level and it becomes too much.

This brings me to in ear monitors, has anyone tried the Sensaphonics and how do you feel about them. Does anyone have other suggestions for a better pair of in ear monitors?

I have the Headroom Micro amp and a Meier Corda Aria on the way, I am hoping the Aria is a step up from the Micro, anyone have any experience comparing these two amps?

Any comments would be appreciated on the questions above.

Thanks

I've never heard the Sensa custom IEMs myself but a number of Head-Fi members have these and the general impression I get is that they're quite good.

The competitive products for custom IEM's are the Ultimate Ears UE10-Pro and Westone ES2. The Westone ES3 are another possibility, although these are not really intended for audiophile use but for studio monitoring instead.

For non-custom IEM's, the main ones getting press these days are the Shure E500 and Ultimate Ears triple.fi 10 Pro.

Lots to read on these forums about each of these!

Digihead may be able to help you. He's got the UE10Pro, Westone ES2, Westone ES3, Sensa 2X-s and the Etymotic ER4S (w/custom molds).

Let's not forget the ACS-2t series, that's an updated Sensa anyway!

Lots of reviews around for all of these IEMs. As for the Sensas specifically, I've had mine for a couple of years or so, and still fit great, still sound teh awesome, and are still in working order.

Thanks everyoe. I have also just seen the Ultimate Ears UE Hybrid on the internet, has anyone tried these?

My reservation with in ear monitors in the isolation, I don't want to be totally isolated, so the 10-12 db cut of the Hybrids looks like I need consider this one along with the Sensaphonics.

Well I just received a quotation from Sensaphonics today that my left ear monitor was dead and my right ear monitor had moisture in it. They offer USD$300.- to repair them. I think I'm going to go ahead with it.
