Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy either the HD428 or HD448 and was wondering whether my Ipod nano (3rd gen) will be able to power them without the use of an amp?  The packaging said that they were "optimized for Ipods and Mp3 players" but I cant seem to find threads that answer my question regarding the HD428s specifically...

Thanks in advance!

Sorry I have never listened to those headphones but there seems to have some common rules.

Full size headphones are normally harder to be powered WELL (a nice sound but not just loud) due to the larger coils.

If Senn says "Optimized for iPod" it is some kind of reliable. The sound could be quite reasonable if you use an iPod, and it could be (not too much) better if you use good sources and amps.

If you like it, try it.

I'm not so sure; this week I bought hd218 to go with my Sony X1060. Using the senn IE the volume usually around 14/30, the volume is not very loud. With the HD218 to get the same volume I need to use 25/30. I can easily see people who need more volume running out of steam. And according to the box, it was also optimalised for DAPs.
BTW, overlooking the insensitivity, the HD218 sounds very decent for a closed budget phone.

Thank you. I think Sony's A845/6/7s and X1050/60/61s have quite small power output (smaller than normal) as I always see the owners complain about it, I am not sure about Nanos.

I've decided to get an amp with the Senns, also read that the 428 and 448 have the same sound but with different exterior designs?  Is this true?

The HD 428 and HD 448 differ in both their sound quality and exterior design.

The former has a bass-driven sound while the latter is more detailed and lifelike.
