Sennheisers/AKG/Beyers any good?

since you find team akg, sennheiser, at, beyer, grado, ety, shure, westone, ultrasone, stax, bose, jens, etc etc, yes they are good. what sort of question is that? all these headphones have their respective fans. i happen to be in the camp that AT headphones look nice but fall off too easily to so i don't bother, so im beyer fan.

of course they are good; are they good for you however, is the question you should not ask, but rather research and listen to to find out.

So the OP owns:
  1. one closed circumaural phone (A-T)
  2. one open supraaural phone (Grado)
Then an open circumaural model wouldn't make the worst complement (IEMs would be more different, of course, but so is their typical usage), and as it happens, said three manufacturers have some very fine models available. (I also think that Sennheiser makes some of the world's best-performing dynamic headphone drivers - would you've guessed that even HD650 drivers are only 38 mm in diameter? I was a bit surprised - , with the big Beyers not being too far behind, but that's another matter.) Admittedly pricing in the States tends to be less competitive than over here.

Well-performing open circumaural models can combine very good comfort levels, "open" sound and excellent bass extension while giving soundstaging that is hard to reach by other concepts (with larger earcups one can apply some semi-open baffle trickery, seemingly pioneered back in the day by AKG's K240 Sextett).

My experience so far:

Grado RS-2, AKG K1000, Sennheiser HD650

cool.gif
Audio-Technica W5000.

plainface.gif
AKG K701

frown.gif
Beyerdynamic DT-990

(All of the above I have owned at some point.)

What was wrong with the DT990?

The treble was so shrill it made them almost unlistenable for me. I mainly listen to stuff like old Bob Dylan or old Rolling Stones, and the highs were just earpiercing. I could listen for like an hour at a time, max. After a few days I took them back to the store, paid a 100 euro difference and walked out with a pair of HD650s. This was months ago and I couldn't be happier with that decision.
There is a slight chance that this was happening because of a too short burn-in, but having read other opinions about the same issue, I wasn't willing to take the risk.

I sometimes use "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," followed by "Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat" as test tracks when checking for treble characteristics in different headphones, and have found that so far my ER-4S handles these two tracks the best, and then the beyerdynamic DT 250.

So, I think if I found the treble of the DT 990 to be too much, I also would have given a Sennheiser model a shot at improving things.

whenever i read these kinds of posts, it always frustrates me. it's just such a useless and wasteful post. when someone asks a questions, either you answer it or you don't. if you don't want to answer it, read the thread and move on, but don't try to give "smart" answers like "of course they are all good, just try them yourself." if everyone starts giving answers like that, what's the point of having this forum?

one of the reasons for the existence of this board is to help people make informed decisions. next time, just read it and move on if you aren't going to answer.

I first bought a pair of grado sr225's and thought they were fantastic, but then they broke so i replaced them with some sennheiser hd580's. All i can say is wow, in my opinion the 580's were so much better than the grado's adding bass and depth to the music. They made the music as many before have stated more musical, still detailed but much more enoyable than the grados and so comfy you actually want to put them on your head. the build quality is fantastic, certainly seem like they could take a fair beating unlike my poor grado's

. If i could choose just one pair to have it would be the sennheisers without even thinking about it. just depends on what music you listen to, i do have to say the sennheisers were fantastic for rock and metal etc which the sennheisers dont seem too good at.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

With some cans the harmonica intro to "Visions of Johanna" sounds sweet like manna from heaven, while with some nasty cans it sounds like someone is trying to fit an ice pick into your ear canal.

You mean Grados for rock and metal, right?
I already mentioned this in some other thread, but I'm so excited about it I'm posting it here too: soon I'll have a pair of MS-2i to complement the HD650s. As much as I love the Senns, God I miss the headbanging... Fanboys of the world, UNITE!

hehe.

I like sometimes have contrast. 8-)

When I listen movies, I tend to prefer Sennheiser, they less prone to show hiss or imperfect sound. Beyer are quite revealing.
